There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml.

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml, however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

I have been trying to find a job for the past 2 years and I have not been able to go further than a round two interview of four. I have applied to multiple jon openings through LinkedIn, Indeed, SimplyHired, and other smaller platforms that I can't remember because I've been through so many. I have tried directly contacting companies asking if they are interested in freelance work or even an opportunity to have an informative interview and nothing. I have tried temp agencies and it's either truly crappy pay work or they are just not interested in me. I have updated my resume numerous times, I have gone to job fairs and talk with companies and nothing. I have tried to reach out to what little network that I have and they have really not been helpful. Hell, I've even tried applying to Walmart and I still got no response and it's been like 2 months. I just don't know what to do anymore. If anyone can kindly give me some advice, that would be greatly apperciated.

  • I have a Bachelors in Psychology and I have over 5 years of customer service experience.

I would like to join the single-day general strike that is being called for the US this Friday, January 30th, but I'm wondering exactly how to do this. I've never had the occasion to strike before and have now been researching online for a little while and not finding conclusive answers to my question:

How do I call or report this to my employer? PTO? Vacation? Sick Day? Dock Pay? Obviously they don't have a "strike" category for reporting employee's time.

One of my search results led to a discussion about this on Reddit and a big debate seems to be whether to take PTO or not. Many people said that taking PTO defeated the purpose of the strike, but I think that this situation is different than a normal strike because the point of this one is not to impact my employer but to send a message that we can impact the economy to hurt the Federal administration.

Edit: marked a phrase as bold.

obligatory I'm a (male) cross dresser and I like how hold ups feel. Bonus point because in winter they serve as a first layer under my other clothes.

I'm 5' 12" tall, skinny built and months ago I bought a L size from falke. I adjusted them to the same height, walked about 10 minutes and suddenly the left one started to fall. The right one always stayed in place.

I don't use lotions or creams but I never shave my legs, so maybe my (not so) hairy legs are the problem? If so, how come only the left hold up fell?

Should I fold the hold ups so the silicone bands touch when I'm not using them? does that help to keep them in good condition?

Does it help to clean the silicone bands with tepid water and a cotton cloth after use?

Would you advice to wear both hold ups and a garter belt? Seems to be too much and if I use a plane I'll be outed (metal clips)

It's a generic question and the first answer it merits is "It depends." but let me explain myself a bit more.

I'm looking at changing my phone in two or three months and the current phone I have was a bit of a let down. It's a BlackView and I bought it being rugged but the phone comes with a few quirks I can't get rid of.

On Lemmy, Nothing Phone is randomly mentioned. Some talk down on it, others praise it.

I've set a budget for how much I'm willing to spend on my next phone but the store I usually go to has added the brand to their catalogue and one of the models, although a bit more than what I want to spend is something I could consider.

The model in question is the Nothing CMF Phone 1, 8GB RAM, 128 GB storage, 5G network ready.

But how different and better from the average brand is Nothing Phone? What sets them apart?

I was walking past my local fire station recently which always looks a bit mysterious because of the darkened windows and there never being any visible activity inside. So it got me thinking, what are the people inside doing when they're not heading out to fight fires?

niche community will work?

I'm interested in your ideas and strategies.

additionally not quite related to the topic.

Unfortunately, I didn't manage to register on BlueSky, or rather, I managed to, but my account was blocked for suspicious activity a second after registration. Idk why.

Would protestors be safer? Thousands of masked people with guns. Chaos?

I can’t help but think that the only solution to ICE is a “well regulated militia” in combination with political reform, with both being necessary.

Yo yo!

Just looking for a general overview of what your thoughts are on the country. I’ll most likely be in Barcelona but I wanna know about the whole country. That could go for anything like; food, culture, sports, night life, weather, racism, family dynamics, drug life, etc. Even if you were only a tourist Im interested to hear your thoughts!

I have a couple that lives above my apartment and the guy regularly workouts in his apartment. His workouts happen 4-5 times a week sometimes twice a day. Weekdays he'll do a workout 630am and play electronic music at the same time. Sometimes he'll workout again 530pm.

I know the sound I'm hearing are the result of dumbells/barbells bouncing on the floor because he's doing 6 reps and dropping the weights on the last one. He will do a few sets. Workouts last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

I've tried getting the attention of building management but they don't seem to want to get involved. When I initially complained, they reached out via email to my neighbor and he responded that he was away on vacation.

As retaliation, for the past week I started blasting music all day (we both work from home) right when he starts he workout. I can hear him scrambling trying to find a way to soundproof the floors. Him and his girlfriend can't get into bed until I turn off the music. So far I haven't had any of the other neighbors complain about the music (I hardly see them). I stopped for a couple days to see if he would stop working out, but he was back at it again and I immediately turned on the music again.

For the record, I've never seen/met him in person.

I have quite a few public playlists on 2 channels that I maintain. I am migrating the channels to a new instance. Unfortunately, I can't migrate the videos themselves because of the overall size, so I will need to re-import them on the new instance without the playlists connected to them.

But if I had at least a text file for each playlist, I could re-build them much faster.

They have never been to school. They've never said anything about wanting to read. But when they have to read something, they pretend they forgot their glasses or smth like that. They're insecure about it. I feel sad for them. That said, they're pretty stubborn. What can I possibly do to convince them to try learning?

So I'm broke and I buy the cheapest stuff. I bought an iPod Touch 6th Gen off eBay with a cracked screen and a bad battery for about $15. However, what I didn't know was that apparently the battery was soldered to the Logic Board, which I should've looked up I guess... what can I do to tinker a bit with this device, make it a fun tech project, and still make it usable? It says working condition other than the bad battery...

Hi! I'm looking for some good book recommendations! I'm looking for something like Beautiful World, Where are You by Sally Rooney. It's about 4 friends and they all date each other at different times. However, she injects a bit of political theory in to the story, about how conservative isn't sustainable because nothing can be conserved. It was a really good part of the book, I though. Any books where they inject political theory like that? Also, political fiction is welcome. I enjoyed reading these books:

It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis Plot Against America by Philip Roth 1984 by George Orwell Brave New World by Aldous Huxley It Happened Here by Richard Dresser

Thank you!

Considering the amount of tech and self hosting types that live in cities, it seems like it would be popular to have little mesh intranets all over the place, but I'm not aware of any.

I read about NYC Mesh a while back, and I wonder if there are other similar things already in widespread use that I just haven't heard about.

PSA is a public service announcement, an awareness campaign.

It could be as simple as teaching everyone to walk on the same side of the footpath in each direction, to demonstrating how quickly a fire spreads and ways to prevent and react.

With reports that the witnesses in today’s murder by ICE were all detained (and their phones presumably confiscated), I’ve been thinking nonstop about if I were to record ICE or the cops doing something, how could I ensure that any videos I record are not able to be deleted, assuming my phone was confiscated? I’m talking about specific tactics.

My phone runs iOS. I already have a strong passcode which hopefully makes brute forcing difficult. I use ADP and the only thing I back up automatically are photos and videos. In theory, I think my setup is fairly secure, since it would be hard to get into my phone or my iCloud account. But I don’t know what vulnerabilities or tools I may be missing.

I’m asking for iOS, but I think it’s good to discuss Android and GrapheneOS as well.

a caregiver can be a RN that performs a job in a hospital, might be in a union, gets paid and has pauses, but also a person that does it for somebody in the family who needs caregiving, like an aging parent or a wife with MS.

I've heard so many stories of mostly women, complaining but mostly venting that they have a regular job AND then have to go home and must take care of an ungrateful elder, are not being paid, how taxing it is, while other siblings do nothing but offer platitudes, do not to help and have normal lives.

I can understand why people act so passively because taking care of an aging parent or a wife with MS is hard, not valued, back breaking non stop job, physically and mentally, unpaid and unrecognized by society but at the same time, expected. It's even worse because adults without this kind of responsibility love to judge and call you ungrateful for not sacrificing your life for your ailing parents (they gave you life!!, that's not christian!!). Most you'll hear from people somehow aware of this situation is that you're a hero or an angel, which is so insulting and out of touch.

I wouldn't sacrifice my life for my parents, move in with them to be their maid 24/7 like these women.

But what if it was just another job, I was paid, had my pauses and I could call in sick and clock out? It looks better.

Where you live, is this possible? How much in wages did you lose? Any regrets?

(I had another account but I had to use this one because I forgot the password...)

So, my son's girlfriend is really obsessed with collecting old devices and "jailbreaking" them and it seems quite popular. I've never done it before, I wonder why it's so popular?
