It's gonna be named Trumpball isn't it?

As a "soccer" fan, I'm glad we get football back.

You would think that this would annoy a good portion of the US, particularly the ones who voted for him.

Football renamed so third world countries that play mindless games chasing a ball around can use it?

Blasphemy!

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Get ready for Trumpball, where the points don’t matter because whoever pays the most wins!

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 78 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Is this all because that guy gave him a fake peace prize?

[–] MuskyMelon@lemmy.world 25 points 3 days ago (1 children)

We should give him a fake peace prize

Here's your peas prize.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

And let him keep the gold trophy he stole. And licked his poo hole real good. Yeah.

That's how politics works man!

. . . wait.

[–] Jumbie@lemmy.zip 18 points 2 days ago

There is no fucking way in hell I am clicking a Fox News link. It’s like dipping my phone in raw shit.

[–] Kage520@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

If it's named after Trump can we call it Fatball? It kind of sounds similar and the F is the same so it can still be the NFL.

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Doucheball.

[–] IphtashuFitz@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

He wants his own Super Bowl trophy for his personal collection.

Because America First? I guess...

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I want FIFA to go all in on nonsensical awards. Need a FIFA Chef of the Year award, FIFA’s best new artist, or FIFA Best Original Screenplay

It's called gridiron, it's always been called gridiron, no need to change its name, just stop calling it football. 🤷‍♂️

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I’ve never heard anyone ever say I’m going down to the bar to watch gridiron.

[–] Star@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 days ago

What a metal name! I wonder how that mixup even started. That one just sounds cooler...

Gridiron: a structure above the stage of a theater, from which hung scenery and the like are manipulated.

I always suspected that under all that padded costume these guys were really theatre geeks.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Technically… gridiron football…

Just saying.

[–] leftzero@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Sure, but how often does foot-“ball” contact occur? (And I don't mean the players' testicles, I mean that oblong thing the players carry around the field and occasionally throw around).

At some point you've got to be honest with yourself and admit that football isn't an appropriate name for the sport.

Rugby did it, gridiron can too.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Just for the record, and with making no value judgements…to me, gridiron football is just a bunch of dudes in tights chasing other dudes in tights.

Don’t ask me where the “football” comes from.

[–] Grace_Schlick@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 1 day ago

RFU = Rugby Football Union

[–] falseWhite@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago (4 children)

The rest of the world couldn't give a shit. Football always was football. No one gives a shit what you call your national sport that no other country in the world partakes in.

[–] Zamboni_Driver@lemmy.ca 16 points 3 days ago

Seems like you have a pretty strong opinion for someone who doesn't give a shit 😂

[–] x00z@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

that no other country in the world partakes in.

Well there's rugby.

Maybe they should call it American rugby.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Too much body armour to be called rugby.

[–] qupada@fedia.io 7 points 3 days ago

Also far too many clock stoppages.

Rugby: an 80-minute game that completes in around 100 minutes, inclusive of the 15 minute break between halves.

Gridiron: a 60-minute game that inexplicably takes 3.5 hours.

Very little fucking about in rugby, they just get on with it.

[–] sauerkrautsaul@lemmus.org 3 points 3 days ago

in Ireland it often will get called soccer a lot of the time because football means Gaelic Football (depending on some context), but then sometimes they definitely say football for english football and gaelic for gaelic

[–] andMoonsValue@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

How bout them Epstein files?...

A useful tool for those who pay him or give him fake peace awards

[–] SuperNovaStar@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

'soccer' is Oxford slang anyways. Funny that it caught on in the US.

[–] Raglesnarf@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm probably just dumb but I thought the technical name was Gridiron Football, doesn't that count?

[–] human@slrpnk.net 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Yep.

Football is a family of team sports that involve, to varying degrees, kicking a ball to score a goal. Unqualified, the word football generally means the form of football that is the most popular where the word is used. Sports commonly called football include association football (known as soccer in Australia, Canada, South Africa, the United States, and sometimes in Ireland and New Zealand); Australian rules football; Gaelic football; gridiron football (specifically American football, arena football, or Canadian football); International rules football; rugby league football; and rugby union football.[1] These various forms of football share, to varying degrees, common origins and are known as "football codes".

And though the jokes about gridiron not actually using your feet much are understandable, kicking the ball might not be the reason any of these sports are called "football". It's actually possible it's because they are played on foot, to distinguish them from horseback sports like polo, which were more of a thing at the time they were named.

There are conflicting explanations of the origin of the word "football". It is widely assumed that the word "football" (or the phrase "foot ball") refers to the action of the foot kicking a ball.[13] There is an alternative explanation, which is that football originally referred to a variety of games in medieval Europe that were played on foot.[14] There is little conclusive evidence for either explanation.

He's still sore about the XFL, isn't he.

[–] Lembot_0005@lemy.lol 8 points 3 days ago

Succer Trump wants some balls, huh? It doesn't make sense.

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Are we talking about what the dementia patient says again!?

[–] FinalRemix@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"Dementia patient" makes it sound like he's being treated.

[–] EtAl@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

He's being managed. Apparently, his brand of dementia can't be treated, only slowed. A big symptom is him losing his circadian rhythm, and sleep deprivation hastens the disease. I've heard he's only got a few months before the big dirtnap. Then we'll have President Vance.

it makes sense he hates America, when the maggots realize that they still don't care, all are treasonous and need to hang from nooses

[–] MolochHorridus@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It should be changed to weakling rugby.

[–] Grace_Schlick@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 1 day ago

Rugby Gridiron / griddie / gridder
