Well they'd probably have still been bad parents pre-AI.
I have no problem with an automated book reader - so long as we can be sure the book is being read verbatim.
I loved Dr. Seuss as a kid before I could read. There came a time when my dad just borrowed an audiobook collection from the library, duped the tape, and basically told me to have fun.

Yes, it's crucially important to/with read to your kids. But when it's the same book the hundredth time, they can do with an audiobook and you can read them new stuff.
