Concurrent ads is one usage, yes. But from when people started reacting on YouTube, I always thought there should be a more seamless way. When I started seeing takedown notices for people reacting to music videos, I thought why can't they just overlay/embed it. It seemed like a no-brainer to me. Now that technology is finally here.
As for the technology being co-opted by ads, on my TV I don't have ReVanced and so am stuck with ads, if I can have silent ads play at the side rather than delay what I'm trying to watch at the beginning of a video, I'd go for the side ads.

Is your TV an android TV? There's smarttube if it's a tizen TV there's tizentube

Then you can install Kodi with piped plugin. A bit less straightforward but it works
I haven’t heard of tizentube and tizenbrew yet. Thanks! For the longest time I thought Tizen didn’t really have any modding options.
