In my experience as a hiker, the moment a black bear becomes aware of your existence, they haul ass in the opposite direction.

Unless they're absolutely starving, it's really unlikely that one will attack you. Even with cubs they're far more likely to stick them in a tree and run away than to attack.

I'm no bearologist but isn't this a grizzly bear, the more aggressive beariant?

I'm no berryologist, but the kodiak bear is presumed to be far more aggressive.

Anyway, don't remember the documentary, but it showed a bear pick up the scent of a moose from miles away and kept the scene going as it ran a marathon until it caught up.

So if a bear wants to eat you, you'll only see or hear its charge. Otherwise it doesn't want to eat you.
