For the second, failure to appear is contempt of court. In practice, failure to appear for jury selection usually just results in your name going in the next pool, as long as you have a reasonable excuse. Failure to appear in court once selected though… that’s serious. Courts can still be very lenient if the juror appears to have made a best effort to appear, but just blowing it off can result in fines or jail time at the discretion of the court.

I have been summoned for jury selection 3 times.

2 times the defendant pled guilty before the jury selection day, so i didnt have to show up (the clerk contacted me to inform me that my presence was no longer required).

The 3rd time I was actually selected for the jury. It was a sexual assault case, and it lasted 4 days. 3 days of the actual trial, and the 4th day was charge to the jury, our deliberation, and the ruling.

Not as a juror, but i had some detectives present me with a warrant to appear as a character witness for the crown for some dude i knew for a few months a decade prior.

For a dangerous offender hearing.

There was no way to avoid that. Being a warrant rather than simply a summons, I am certain i would have seen my own day in court and jail time.

As a juror, i once got a summons in the mail. But i had been away from home for several months taking care of my father.

I didn't respond. Assumed it was too late anyway.

Nothing happened.

This was just for jury selection though, i believe. Had i been selected and not appeared, depending on reasons, likely same as above.

If you've been selected for jury duty, you can face fines and jail time up to 2yrs (less a day) in some provinces.

I got a letter saying I was being summoned for jury duty the week the lock downs where starting in 2020. I tried calling the number looking for what was happening, but of course lock downs so no one was there to answer the phone. I set the letter down thinking I would get back to it later, but as the months went on and I realized how many things where not on my bingo card I saw a news article about how court cases where being held in an autlotoramum I had no idea where the letter went so I just decided that if anything happened I would either get another letter or officers would come to my door.

I want the experience of being selected for jury duty, I want to see what happens on the other side of the decision making but I did not either get a second summons or charged for ignoring a summons.

My partner was summoned once. We were currently living literally on the other side of the province from where it was (we previously lived there, but it was sent to the current address). Thankfully, we were already planning on being back there prior to the date. So she went to the courthouse or whatever and told them the situation.

They really didn't know what to do, but said to write a letter to the judge, which they then supplied her with paper and a pen. She didn't know what to say, they didn't know what to say.

So she wrote the situation out, left it there, and heard nothing afterwards. That was probably over 8 +/- 2 years ago. So who knows.
