A British Columbia First Nation says at least 55 children died or disappeared while attending a residential school near Williams Lake, more than triple the number recorded for the institution in the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation memorial register.

The higher figure is contained in an interim report into the St. Joseph’s Mission Indian Residential School by the Williams Lake First Nation.

The report says the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation memorial register lists 16 children by name as having died while under the school's care.

It says the additional 39 deaths or disappearances were verified "through archival documentation."

The Canada Border Services Agency acted "deceitfully" when it fired a woman without a proper investigation — while shielding others from liability — after the border agency failed to collect roughly $26 million in duties, says the federal public service labour board.

"In all, the employer's egregious conduct in this matter consisted of bad faith," the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board said in a recent decision.

"The employer deceitfully disguised its failure to conduct a proper investigation, to give it the appearance of due process."

The case was brought forward by Anne Kline. She was fired by the CBSA in 2018 after the agency accused her of negligence resulting in the loss of about $26 million in import duties it could have imposed against a company.

If there's anything people can agree on these days, it's that flying sucks.

Which may partially explain the online roasting of WestJet's new UltraBasic fare, where you can board the plane and that's about it.

Announced Tuesday, the new "no-frills fare option" doesn't permit carry-on baggage (unless you're flying overseas), has pre-assigned seats at the back of the plane, and those who select the fare will be the last to board the plane. They also can't collect WestJet Rewards.

Even then, an UltraBasic round trip from Toronto to Calgary at the end of June costs about $650.

The contracts between the province’s health authorities and 16 for-profit companies detail massive markups for the provision of health-care workers – from nurses to X-ray technologists to occupational therapists – who are now propping up the faltering public system. Sources tell CTV News anywhere from a quarter to nearly all the staff in a hospital operating room or care home ward, for example, are there on a short-term contract.

Many of them have left the public system and union pensions to make much higher hourly rates while retaining the ability to choose when and where to work. The agency hires them as temp workers, taking a big slice of the pie for doing so.

For example, a unionized, health authority worker with a designation as a registered nurse in their first 10 years on the job makes roughly $45 as their base hourly wage. A recent posting from a prominent staffing agency that runs travelnurse.ca posted a week-long request for a surgical nurse in the Lower Mainland offering $52.50 per hour, with “bonus incentives” and unspecified benefits.
