Very new to self hosting and truenas.

Got an old dell with 6x4tb of storage. Turns out they are all SAS drives and turns out hardware raid is the old thing now. Knowing none of this before what can I do with SAS drives connecting to my raid card (in photo) knowing that this is just a home NAS, SAS drives are more expensive and better to just go SATA.

What do you think?

Get a pcie to data, sell all the SAS drives and save up for 6x4tb of Seagate data drives?

What would you do with a dell server with old SAS drives if the end goal was a dependable home NAS for important home files?

I'm new to this so any input helps, thanks!

infinite loop, paying with the other's money

Very informative thanks!

Seems like seagate 4-8tb is the sweet spot. Is there any difference in the models of the segate drives? Or just the iron wolf NAS are the better choice?

Also, currently can fund all ssds for primary and I'm not that interested in read speeds. I'm more interested in a safe space for files to get stored in without fear of loss.

I have a old tell server tower, running truenas scale. Once I get a pcie sata card I will set up with raid5.

And zfs is just a backup of the raid, like a sync?

And then I think my move would be to get 6 Seagate drives lol

Lemmy users are smarter, because they literally got off the bandwagon and followed what they believed in.

Active users not reactive. And that is not only when using platforms. People that use Lemmy and well rounded.

It's like an oasis that is free to enter, but only for those that realized they were in a cage.

Stuff like this shows you who is just there to sell your data, and not sell you an experience.

Interesting, thanks. If you no expert, the I'm a newbie lol.

I will try a sata card and raiding them through software. What would you recommend for 6x4tb ? I know there are raids and mirrors, I was thinking like raid 5 but still unsure. I also have a icydock for 2.5 in drives that I can raid separately with ssds when I have the funds.

What is your experience with raids and safest bet on old hardware, if running 24/7 with important data?

So, it's better if I get a normal pcie to sata card and connect them individually. Then just raid them through software.

Also, what are your thoughts on second hand drives, and just monitoring them and replacing them as needed. (im currently saving up for good new 4tb x 6 drives lol)

wow, that's inspiring.

I agree that it is a balancing act that one must master. But when one doesn't yet have their footing in something, it feels like that initial workload is greater then the balance that comes in upholding the hustle in the future.

Just some thoughts from experience, maybe my weakness is thinking this way. Excuses are a coping mechanism that I'm trying to cut out of my life rn.

wait until you try to start a business on top

the easiest part would then be to cut everything off, maybe everyone off too
