Canada desperately needs a national strategic internet constellation.

Edit to fix link.

CBC is a crown corporations. WE, canadians, own it. It is OURS and it is INDEPENDANT JOURNALISM. Crown corporations are wholly owned federal or provincial organizations that are structured like private or independent companies. They include enterprises such as the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), VIA Rail, Canada Post and the Bank of Canada; as well as various provincial electric utilities. Crown corporations have greater freedom from direct political control than government departments.

PP do not understand the difference between publicly funded and ‘state’ funded. The government transfers Canadian taxpayer money to the CBC which operates separately from government. The government does not control the CBC. This simple distinction is beyond his limited intellect.

CBC is PUBLICLY funded!! Therefore, yes the funds are funnelled through the govt, but not govt state media. We will leave that to fox propaganda news and post media that is owned by the USA ultra right wing.

Postmedia is owned by Hedge fund billionaires allied with Trump and pushing MAGA propaganda.

We cannot overlook the likelihood that these Palestinian solidarity encampments were labelled security threats because of the relentless pressures on university administrators exerted by Zionist politicians and pro-Zionist government officials to characterize any criticism of Israel as threatening to the "safety" of Jewish students and faculty. Such pressures have been well-documented in the cases of the Universities of Alberta and Calgary, and are exhibited in many of the submissions to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights' investigation of "antisemitism" on Canadian campuses (May 2024). Notably, the committee's December 2024 report recommended, among other measures, that universities adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism which encompasses anti-Zionism or criticism of the state of Israel.

In January, a public inquiry into foreign election interference raised concerns about the threat of hostile nations, such as China and Russia, meddling in Canada’s democracy.

While these worries are well founded, Canadians should be equally concerned about the threat posed by our southern neighbour and erstwhile closest ally, the United States, whose tech companies control nearly all our digital public infrastructure, and whose leaders are increasingly aligned with a second Donald Trump administration which poses a direct threat to Canadian sovereignty.

[...]

Throughout most of their history, the major social media platforms have generally reflected this democratic spirit, including strong attitudes toward freedom of expression and a general reticence against appearing politically partisan.

Increasing authoritarianism in the U.S.

But that era is now at an end and Canadians need to be clear-eyed about the danger that American social media platforms will abuse their enormous power and influence to undermine Canadian democracy.

Linked National Post on purpose. Given their bias I believe they'd present the worst case scenario.

E: Apparently the article is from 2016 so the cost is likely higher today.

Sharing this widely, long overdue and we need to grow these relationships quickly!

A.I. summary:

On International Women's Day, March 8, 2025, demonstrators across Quebec rallied to defend women's rights and protest against the policies of the new American administration under President Donald Trump. In Montreal, many protesters wore red, chanted "shame on you," formed human chains, and observed eight minutes of silence. Similar protests occurred in other Quebec cities, including Sherbrooke, Joliette, Victoriaville, and Saguenay.

These gatherings, organized by the collective Mothers at the Front under the banner "Together for our daughters," aimed to denounce perceived attacks by the U.S. administration on women's rights, human rights, health, the environment, and the economy.

The protests reflect a broader movement opposing President Trump's policies, reminiscent of the Women's Marches that took place globally following his first inauguration in 2017.

Canadians are being gouged at the supermarket cash register by a handful of corporations that act like a cartel, jacking up prices and using "shrinkflation" to sell less for more.

They've also been caught in a series of scandals, from "Tatergate"---a class-action lawsuit in the U.S. against Canadian potato corporations for price-fixing---to Loblaws and others charging for the packaging on meat, for years.

The simple answer is price caps on food staples, an NDP policy that was successfully implemented in France just last year. With the cost of living about to shoot up again, we must prevent price gouging by Canada's corporate grocery magnates.

Summary:

Concerns About Social Media: The author draws parallels between concerns that led to discussions about banning TikTok in the U.S. and the current state of X (formerly Twitter).

X as a Threat: The author argues that X, under Elon Musk's ownership, poses a threat to Canadian democracy.

Increased Racism and Misinformation: The platform is described as having become more racist and a source of increasing misinformation since Musk's acquisition.

Content Moderation: Musk's leadership is criticized for gutting content moderation, unbanning alt-right figures, and turning the platform into a partisan propaganda machine.

"Free Speech Absolutism": Musk's defense of his actions using "free speech absolutism" is dismissed as untenable.

Canadian Law: Canadian freedom of expression law is noted to be more robust than that of the U.S., allowing for reasonable limits on speech.

Foreign Influence: The author suggests that X's current conduct would not be tolerated if it were aligned with a government like China.

Musk and Trump: Musk's close ties to Donald Trump and the potential for pro-Trump propaganda targeting Canadian voters are highlighted as a specific threat.

Echoes of the Broadcasting Act: The author draws a parallel to the Broadcasting Act of 1958, which restricted foreign ownership of broadcasters to protect Canadian discourse.

Message to Social Media Companies: Banning X would send a message to other social media companies about their responsibilities to Canadians.

Call to Action: The author urges the current Prime Minister to ban X before the next election.

Trump's annexation comments: Notes Trump's comments about annexing Canada.

X as an Anti-Canadian Propaganda Machine: Concludes that X should be treated as a real threat.

First off, welcome to all the new users these past few days! Please take a look at our recent welcome thread with some guides and tips that will help you get settled in:

https://lemmy.ca/post/39167034

This is the nomination thread for which song(s) we will submit to Lemmyvision 2! Please comment your nominations in this thread for them to be considered. This post will be pinned to the instance briefly, but you can continue nominating songs until March 25th (2025). You will be able to find this post in !canada@lemmy.ca

What is lemmyvision

Lemmyvision is inspired from Eureddision (itself a reenactment of the Eurovision song contest) which was held on r/europe some years ago, and based on the participation of national communities / instances and the delicate musical taste of their members (you!).

Every country/community is welcome to participate! The contest follows the rule of “national languages only” but regional languages are welcome too, if your community would like to feature a song in a regional language of your country, that’s awesome. The aim is to promote different languages and cultures from around the world, to share more between our online communities across Lemmy, and discover songs from lesser known artists.

What is lemmy.ca doing

Specific to Canada, here is what the organizer has said:

You’re invited to participate by sending a song in any official or regional language / dialect from Canada !

Given the multilingual aspect of your country, I’m open to multiple submissions (one for each language you’d like to represent, so Inuktitut, French Canadian, any First Nations languages are welcome) from lemmy.ca, just mention which language is linked to which submission 🤗

As such, please do the following:

  • Songs must have been released within the last year (after January 1st, 2024).
  • Songs must not be international hits (see the 'Full rules and details' link below for more context)
  • Nominate each song as a separate comment under this post. If the song contains vocals, it must be one of the 'Canadian languages' as outlined above, and you must specify which language you are nominating it under

Please nominate the songs by March 25th (2025).

I set a reminder to post a voting thread on March 25th. If I am late on that (like last year), please let one of the admins know and we will get on that. That should give us a week before the submission deadline to pick from our list of nomations.

Fair Vote Canada on Bluesky

Germany under PR: Far-right gets 20% but is shut out by democratic parties.

USA under FPTP: Far-right takes over the GOP, erodes democracy, and works to economically weaken us for annexation.

FPTP doesn’t protect democracy—it endangers it.
