A forever war is, at its core, the pursuit of a nebulous objective against an irregular actor on an open-ended timeline. Tragically, the MAGA fever dream of cartel wars in Mexico fits this description down to the letter. Much like efforts to uproot the Taliban or Hamas, “destroying the cartels” is a nebulous and unrealistic goal for the simple reason that drug traffickers are deeply enmeshed within a domestic population. Organized crime, moreover, is driven by profit as opposed to ideology; takedowns of various cartels or kingpings are unlikely to eliminate markets for illicit services.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. special forces soldier involved in the military operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been charged with using classified information about the mission to win more than $400,000 in an online betting market, federal officials announced Thursday.

Gannon Ken Van Dyke was part of the operation to capture Maduro in January and used his access to classified information to make money on the prediction market site Polymarket, the federal prosecutor’s office in New York said.

He has been charged by the Justice Department with unlawful use of confidential government information for personal gain, theft of nonpublic government information, commodities fraud, wire fraud and making an unlawful monetary transaction. He could face years in prison.

Recently published memos from the early days of the shadow docket show the justice seemingly in thrall to the arguments of corporate polluters.

The Trump administration is assigning denaturalization cases to regular prosecutors, which could lead to a surge of people stripped of U.S. citizenship.

I note that this appears to be targeted based on skin color.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s acting attorney general on Thursday signed an order reclassifying state-licensed medical marijuana as a less-dangerous drug, a major policy shift long sought by advocates who said cannabis should never have been treated like heroin by the federal government.

The order signed by Todd Blanche does not legalize marijuana for medical or recreational use under federal law. But it does change the way it’s regulated, shifting licensed medical marijuana from Schedule I — reserved for drugs without medical use and with high potential for abuse — to the less strictly regulated Schedule III. It also gives licensed medical marijuana operators a major tax break and eases some barriers to researching cannabis.

Polling suggests that most Americans agree with him. So does the feedback he gets day to day. The people he meets overwhelmingly oppose the war; many are furious or heartbroken about it. That includes his fellow veterans. “I don’t know a single guy I served with who thinks this thing in Iran is a good idea,” he told me. Many of those guys are MAGA. “This was one of the reasons they were big Trump supporters — he was the antiwar or ‘America first’ candidate.”

Republicans pushed through a budget plan with a $70 billion increase for immigration enforcement after an overnight session in which they beat back Democratic proposals aimed at lowering costs.

“Ultimately, we want to use less fuel, not more, and so we should be looking at increasing vehicle efficiency more,” he said. “We should be looking at public transportation options.”

The article doesn't get into it much, but an acre of solar panels provides a lot more vehicle-miles than an acre of corn turned into ethanol.
