It's possible for us all to lose. Good chance of a famine six months from now because so much of the northern hemisphere couldn't get fertilizer during planting season and the US decided to make food for cows and cars instead of for people

Yeah. They don't have authority to end the contract. Local officials can do things to interfere with utility hookups.

But sending in the local police to attack protesters and the press is just an asshole move

Funding and performing a large chunk of the world's scientific research is not abusive, and with no other country stepping up at the needed scale, it's going to leave everyone worse off.
