The Washington Post told staffers today that it was moving forward with a sweeping round of layoffs that was part of a “broad strategic reset” of the storied newspaper, which will include eliminating the sports desk, severely cutting back on its international coverage, dismantling its books section, and restructuring its local news team.

Though it was not immediately known exactly how many employees would be impacted by the cuts, it had previously been reported that about 100 staffers from the newsroom could be laid off, and as many as 300 employees from the broader company would face terminations.

However, after emails were sent to staffers on Wednesday morning, it is expected that roughly one-third of staff — about 300 of the roughly 800 journalists in the newsroom — will be laid off, with some staffers saying that this was a “bloodbath”.

Murray revealed that the paper would be “shrinking” its foreign news bureaus and drastically altering its local metro coverage.

NEW YORK − A New York judge convicted a police sergeant of second-degree manslaughter for throwing a cooler at a man’s head during a fatal 2023 chase.

Bronx County Judge Guy Mitchell rendered his Feb. 6 verdict against New York City Police Sgt. Erik Duran, 38, for causing the death of 30-year-old Eric Duprey, according to New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office, which investigates police killings. Duprey, a delivery driver, had three children.

“I offer my sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Eric Duprey,” James, whose office prosecuted the case in Bronx Criminal Court, said in a statement. “Though it cannot return Eric to his loved ones, today’s decision gives justice to his memory.”

The letter states that members can review the documents in person, provided they give the DOJ 24 hours’ notice. The option at this point is only available to members of Congress — and not their staff. They may take notes but can’t bring in any electronic devices, the letter said.

The review will only be of the 3 million files currently available to the public, not the extensive trove of more than 6 million documents in total that the DOJ says it has in its possession.
