U.S. President Donald Trump says Canadians would have “much better” health coverage if Canada became the 51st state.

He made the remarks during a briefing in North Carolina, where he toured areas struck by Hurricane Helene on Friday.

“I would love to see Canada be the 51st state,” he said. “The Canadian citizens, if that happened, would get a very big tax cut -- a tremendous tax cut -- because they are very highly taxed.”

“They’d have much better health coverage. I think the people of Canada would like it,” said the president.

I recently stumbled across a post in the c/Europe community (https://lemmy.world/post/24641691) that highlighted alternatives to software and infrastructure from Big Tech companies. This got me thinking - is there a similar resource available for Canadians, or would there be interest in creating one?

THE Liberal Party has surpassed the 30-point threshold for the first time since September 2022 and now sits at 32 per cent, according to EKOS Politics. Indeed, the party is now tied with its vote share in the 2021 election.

Meanwhile, at 39 per cent, the Conservative lead has narrowed to just seven points, a significant shift from the 25-point advantage the party enjoyed in the wake of former finance minister Chrystia Freeland’s resignation a month ago. While the Conservatives would no doubt win the most seats if an election were held tomorrow, it is unlikely they would form a majority government given the renewed Liberal support in Ontario.

According to EKOS Politics, the Liberal resurgence seems to be driven by three factors. First, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation produced a modest but noticeable boost to the party’s standing. Second, the extensive media coverage of the Liberal leadership race accelerated this rise. Finally, the cavalcade of radical announcements from the freshly inaugurated Donald Trump has spurred a renewed sense of national identity, prompting Canadians to rally around their incumbent leaders in a show of solidarity.

Canada should not respond to potential U.S. tariffs with retaliatory tariffs, as this would primarily harm Canadian consumers by driving up prices. Instead, Canada should leverage its industrial and technological capabilities to undermine the monopolistic rent-seeking of American corporations by legalizing and promoting third-party modifications, repairs, and alternative marketplaces for technology, agriculture, and other industries. By dismantling restrictive intellectual property laws—many of which were imposed under the USMCA trade agreement—Canada could become a global hub for jailbreaks, independent app stores, and right-to-repair solutions, thereby reducing dependence on U.S. tech monopolies and fostering a new high-tech economy that directly benefits Canadian consumers and businesses.

As much as I agree with these two contrarians, I believe Trudeau was within his rights to prorogue. The proroguation is clearly just to run the Liberal leadership race, but sadly the PM is allowed to do that.

[David MacKinnon and Aris Lavranos] argued Trudeau’s decision effectively denies Parliament, without reasonable justification, the ability to carry out its constitutional functions as a legislature.

In particular, the application said, prorogation prevents Parliament from dealing “quickly and decisively” with especially pressing issues, including the effects of Trump’s threatened tariffs.

They suggest the true intention of prorogation was to stymie efforts of opposition parties to bring a motion of non-confidence in the Liberal government.

Two recent surveys suggest most Canadians actually agree on something: that U.S. president-elect Donald Trump should keep his hands off Canada.

However, one survey found that a significant chunk of Canadians, nearly a quarter, were at least open to the idea. And another poll found about the same percentage of Americans were also supportive of a merge.

The polls conducted by Abacus Data and Angus Reid Institute follow comments by Trump who has mused that Canada could be annexed by the U.S. and become the 51st state.

Imperial Oil is facing nine charges for allowing millions of litres of contaminated wastewater to leak from its Kearl oilsands mine in northern Alberta, and for failing to mitigate the environmental damage.

The Alberta Energy Regulator announced the charges Friday in connection with a berm overflow of industrial wastewater at the company's Kearl mine, about 70 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.

The berm overflow was the second of two significant leaks at the Kearl mine, which put Alberta's regulatory practices in the spotlight and raised questions about transparency in the oilsands. The first of the two incidents went unreported to the public for nine months.

Carney, 59, kicked off his campaign to take the reins of the governing party at the Edmonton-area hockey rink where he learned to skate as a boy while growing up on the Prairies.

"I'm doing this because Canada is the best country in the world, but it still could be even better," Carney said.

The Harvard-educated Carney said he has the economic bona fides needed to steer Canada through a period of uncertainty as the country stares down president-elect Donald Trump and the threat of punishing tariffs on all our goods.

Carney said Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is the "worst possible" choice to put on the other side of the negotiating table with Trump.

With U.S. president-elect Donald Trump's inauguration just days away, the federal government announced it is sending a slew of drones and two Black Hawk helicopters to the shared border to begin beefed-up patrols — along with 11th-hour hope it will be enough to placate the incoming administration.

The decision by the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, this week to resign as head of the Liberal party has set in motion a leadership race against the backdrop of a looming general election, which will be held amid political turmoil triggered by Donald Trump’s “America first” economic nationalism. It has also given Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, an opportunity to inject himself into yet another country’s political turmoil.

Since Trudeau’s resignation on Monday, Musk has posted repeatedly about Canadian politics on X – the platform formerly known as Twitter he bought in 2022 for $44bn. He has praised clips of Pierre Poilievre, the leader of Canada’s Conservative party, while relishing in Trudeau’s downfall and engaging with rightwing Canadian influencers.

“Girl, you’re not the governor (sic) of Canada anymore, so doesn’t matter what you say,” Musk tweeted in response in the middle of the night on Tuesday.

After announcing his departure, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tried to reach an agreement with opposition leaders so that his government would survive a few more weeks in Parliament, Radio-Canada has learned.

Sources said the day after announcing he would resign on Monday, the prime minister personally called the leaders of the New Democratic Party and the Bloc Québécois.

He wanted to obtain a commitment from one or the other to vote in favour of the budget appropriations — a vote of confidence — at the end of March, once prorogation had passed, the sources said.

That vote of confidence would have ensured the survival of the government for a few more weeks and given the Liberal Party of Canada more time to elect its new leader.

But Trudeau's gambit faltered, with both the Bloc and the NDP refusing to back the embattled prime minister as they stood by their respective promises that they would bring down the government at the first opportunity.

Trump calls the US-Canada border an "artificially drawn line", in what seems like one of the most dumbfounding statements the "build the wall" president could possibly utter.

But which probably isn't, because it's Trump.
