Fun fact: in turkey, cigarettes are unbranded to death, only the name remains. The rest is all warnings.

[–] halvar@lemy.lol 16 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yeah, same here in Hungary. Black box, generic font with the name, warnings on all sides and very visual pictures of what it does to you or what the doctors will have to do to keep you alive. Also only licensed and uniformally branded national tobacco stores can sell it on a universal price and they are all hellbent on always asking for your ID. I think this is almost as good as banning it at this point.

Some smokers I know started collecting the pictures and using them as some trading card game.

this is almost as good as banning it

you would think that, but if they keep selling them, it means people keep buying them

[–] mudstickmcgee@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 week ago

People will keep buying it regardless, prohibition didn't work, war on drugs doesn't work. All they are going to achieve with banning it is opening opp another black market.

The point is to encourage quitting and discourage new user. Alongside with stopping the depiction of smoking = cool in cartoons and movies and also advertisement of it, it actually helps, with smoker dropping globally.

There are also far more extreme measure, like stop people from able to even buy cig if they born after certain year, but that's the most a country can do, they cannot stop the sales of cig entirely because the withdrawal also kills.

[–] porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

because the withdrawal also kills

Ah, you might be thinking of alcohol. Nicotine withdrawal just makes a very strong craving but there is no physical danger.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

Ohh, you're correct.

[–] Cypher@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Nicotine withdrawal does not kill.

It's a pretty grueling way to go, admittedly.

Yeah, it seems like a demise built around suffering and helplessness. If you crave the sweet release of death, this isn't it.

Stop selling it already.

Wednesday, probably.

This reminds me of the old joke:

A guy buys cigarettes, looks at the package and reads "Smoking causes impotence". He hands them back and says "Gimme the ones that with cancer".

This feels like it would make people buy it more because it's such a rad sticker to have on a box. It's like the Parental Advisory notice on CDs. It just made them way cooler and were like a badge of honor.
