I heard Sweden and France have decent fighter jets. And some other tech.

Canada needs to get back in the game of building our own fighters. We have the capabilities. We just need the investment. Instead of giving our money to the US, we really should be spending it on our own industry.

the U.S. has already signalled this country could face serious consequences if the Liberal government decides not to proceed with the arms deal.

"Buy the planes we can kill-switch or else we will do bad things to you"?

Worse than threatening to invade and annex, and worse than continually belittling an ally?

How Russian-bully is that?!?

You just added another year to the embargo after sanity takes over again, buck-o. You wanna try for two?

The US is so full of shit.

"NORAD, he claimed, requires both the U.S. and Canada to fly the same kind of American-built planes."

Before the 60s, and after the 80s, we didn't. Fucking power mongering liars.

I think we're coming to the end of our alliance, we should be looking to our other relationships to help procure the necessary equipment to protect our sovereignty. In the longer term we definitely should be developing some home grown capability.

The Ottawa Citizen is owned by Postmedia. Please use better sources that are not a right-wing American media conglomerate with ties to the Republican party. They also own the Toronto Sun and the National Post.

why buy f-35s when they dump f-18 in the sea for free?

[–] wirebeads@lemmy.ca 25 points 15 hours ago

Let’s go shopping, European style.

Fuck America.

Cancel the remaining planes, what are they going to do, put tariffs on us?

[–] Bane_Killgrind@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

ONE MILLION PERCENT TARIFFS

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 16 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

Not buying. It’s a lease/rent basically

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 4 points 11 hours ago

Will bet dollars to donuts it will have a kill switch and a listening devices.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 8 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

We get to buy the plane, just not own the software or the physical parts I guess.

[–] Reannlegge@lemmy.ca 7 points 13 hours ago

So we are buying iPhones?

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 5 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

How's that effectively different from leases?

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 10 points 13 hours ago

I was trying to be tongue in cheek.

This deal reeks.
