God too many Americans have no idea what real HSR actually could be. Look at the legend there, look how freaking fast that is, and that's a realistic speed at HSR. (China has even faster trains now)
I was in Europe and went Switzerland to Florence in a day, 6ish hours. I realized that was the same as my standard 3 hour flight from the Midwest to the west coast - if you also add in the time it takes to get to the airport, go through security, wait at the gate, boarding, safety talks, taxiing, then taxiing on the landing, deplaning, getting through the airport, and transferring to the destination - but instead of all of that I just walked onto my train and started watching TV on my phone.
It's such a no brainer, it makes no sense why we haven't built it out all over this country.
I feel like part of it is just, how our lawmakers are huge self-serving conniving assholes. Nothing else to it. They don't want to spend the money, they don't want it to be easier for us to get around (for instance, imagine a pregnant woman taking a train out of shithole-Texas to a blue state with real doctors. Control.)
