The foliage is fucked this year because of a drought that started in July. This basically causes the leaves on most trees to just drop and go brown. They aren't changing color this year like they normally would. Trees are dehydrated.

So a lot of trees already have lost leaves earlier than they should, or they are still green. Hence the classic foliage colors aren't around this year.
