I have identified certain positions and stretches that are guaranteed to cause a muscle spasms, and try to avoid them.
I have to sleep with my feet over the end of the bed, in an L shape, because if I sleep with my foot extended, I WILL get hit with a screaming cramp out of a deep sleep. No matter how big a bed is, I have to sleep toward the end, so my feet can hang over.
I also have to be careful stretching. Calf muscles are always vulnerable, but it's easy to pull a muscle along the ribcage that will ache for a week or so.
I've cycled from in shape to out of shape and back again several times in my life, but being prone to muscle spasms has been constant throughout all of it.
