Sometimes I get those, but it's just https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precordial_catch_syndrome

If I take a deep breath the pain increases until it suddenly stops

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Lol

Cause: No one knows.

Treatment: Tell the patient to stop worrying about it.

Sums up a surprising amount of our biology

Yeah, our bodies sometimes have weird random issues, who would have guessed a flesh robot built by trial and error is fucky wucky

Other names: Texidor’s twinge

ooo, now i know the name for that pain i get in my chest cartilage ever since that car accident

[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I cracked some of the cartilage of my ribs a while back as well and I'm pretty sure now suffer from bouts of recurring costochondritis, myself. Could be that. Mine is really fun, pain right over my heart and sometimes left arm pain. On top of that, I've always had health related anxiety, so it's "Don't Have a Panic Attack!" on hard mode. Or I'm slowly dying of heart failure, who knows.

[–] redwattlebird@lemmings.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh my god. The feeling has a name. Thank you. I had always thought it was a heart problem or a rib that popped.

[–] nek0d3r@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

SAME thanks so much!!!

[–] hoppolito@mander.xyz 3 points 1 day ago

Holyy, thanks for this. I can finally put a name to it. Was wondering with my partner for ages what sometimes suddenly befalls us, especially if we’re lying in a weird position.

[–] Ragallos@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

Now I know what to call this! Then ignore it once it goes away.

[–] OldGrayDog@lemmynsfw.com 26 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Had a heart attack 2 1\2 months ago, didn't know I was having one, thought it was indigestion, after a day and a half it was only getting worse, drove myself to the hospital, they gave me an EKG and said I was having a heart attack. They had to send me to different hospital for a stent, 30% of the bottom left side of my heart is now dead. 20% EF. Had a complete blockage in my lad. If I had gone in when the symptoms 1st started my heart wouldn't be all screwed up. It's better to be safe than sorry. I'm only 58.

[–] PineRune@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Wow that's kind of scary how little we may notice something so dangerous.

nice job surviving tho that's a rough experience

One regular sized Ditka, or one hundred tiny Ditkas?

[–] TomMasz@lemmy.world 73 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Light up another Marlboro, you'll be fine.

Ah, yeah. That's smooth.

[–] Binette@lemmy.ml 48 points 1 day ago (9 children)

Seriously though, what are these? I've had them for years and I've tried to ask my doctor about it, but I had too many issues to deal with or they didn' believe me idk

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 35 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Idk but I've went in and everything checked out OK. Had a day where I had what I thought was a heart attack. Vision was going, heart was hurting, couldn't breathe. I thought, "ah shit. Here I go." and then it went away. Went in and it was not a heart attack. The answer was a shrug and nothing is abnormal.

So like... If it is a serious concern, it didn't feel like it was treated as one and nothing was found.

[–] plateee@piefed.social 34 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do you have issues with anxiety/panic attacks? Fun fact, panic attacks can manifest physically with nearly identical symptoms to a heart attack!

(This doesn't mean you shouldn't get things checked out though)

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah - I just knew I was gonna die a few months back, and it was a panic attack. Which is weird because I've historically been low-stress. But between work being crazy and the world being what it is right now, things apparently got to me subconsciously.

My chest got tight, my breathing was labored, my arm went numb. It was terrifying.

And thinking you're having a heart attack doesn't help with the panic attack. But it was amazing how as soon as the EKG showed normal, everything started feeling better quickly. Just the knowledge that it was panic helped so much.

But you should still go to the ER in those cases, because if you assume it's a panic attack and dont go, but turn out to be wrong....

This happened to me too a few years ago, and I'm also quite a calm person, so it caught me by surprise.

It was 6 months or so after becoming a father, and my best guess is that the sleep deprivation was messing with my head. It stopped and I've been fine since.

[–] Greddan@feddit.org 17 points 1 day ago

Seriously.

Me: I have these medical issues I would like to have checked out. Maybe a blood test would be in order?

Doctor: How many units of alcohol do you consume per sitting, per month, please be specific.

Me: Uh..

Doctor: At what exact time do you poop every day?!?

[–] AbsolutelyClawless@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Obviously you should talk to your doctor about it, but as someone who's been dealing with different health issues/symptoms, it could be many things. The ones that aren't directly linked to heart issues, off the top of my head: various stomach issues (gastritis, GERD/acid reflux, h. pylori infection), vagus nerve issues (sometimes caused by stomach problems) that trigger anxiety and panic attacks, costochondritis, even things like mental trauma response can cause wild physical symptoms.

h. pylori infection

stomach ulcers, in common

Dehydration does that to me. Like sometimes I just forget to drink for an entire day. Then I wake up in the middle of the night and feel like total shit. Pain all over my body, chest included.

[–] AWistfulNihilist@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Anxiety, gerd or heartburn in general (it's literally called heartburn, this is more common than you'd think), and like a million other things.

I would get it with anxiety all the time before I was medicated, my doctor told me after my 3rd EKG that the pain from a heart attack really happens when you work it HARD. That might not be much for some people, but the Doc asked me if this happens often after physical activity at all.

My answer was no, and I hike, walk, go up stairs, do all that stuff and have no issue or pain with my heart. YMMV, and as I age I still take heart stuff seriously, but that reduced my anxiety around it significantly.

For me it turned out to be anxiety panic attacks. I started taking anti-anxiety medication and I haven't had any in years.

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@piefed.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I get them sometimes too. After googling it before, my best guess is precordial catch. Apparently good posture and staying hydrated can help prevent it.

[–] Binette@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago

I have neither a good posture or good hydration, so that's a great start lol.

But I read about it and it's quite reasuring that it's nothing serious. Thanks!

[–] BurntWits@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Last year I had it happen to me, turns out it was displaced cartilage in my chest. No idea how it happened. Immediately after finding that out, I got a back injury at work (unrelated) and had to go to physio for it, which also coincidentally helped my chest pain too.

Do they go away if you breath in deeply? Does it hurt more when you breath in? Then it may be back related. There are nerves going from your back under the ribs to your chest.

This has been happening to me since i was a kid.

I thought I was having little heart attacks or something, but i couldn't find anything online about it and was dismissed by doctors.

Is this not normal?

Edit: it was probably precordial catch syndrome

[–] Vile_port_aloo@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You're still alive, so hopefully I'll be ok!?

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Apparently feeling like you are having the start of a heart attack every couple months from age 8-35 is actually "normal" and "benign", i am just learning today...

The human body is so fucked lol

[–] CatZoomies@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

Take a salt tablet, cowboy. Get back in that saddle. If it still hurts, chug some Pepto Bismol. We got work to do.

[–] Quadhammer@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

That's just the stabby cell telling you you're doing a good job

[–] sicarius@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Is this the pain that feels like a knitting needle getting rammed into your chest and only lasts for like 2 seconds but it's two second you think "Shit! I've been stabbed" and everyone around looks at you because you've Just reacted like you've been stabbed.

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Precordial catch. More common when you’re younger but hoo boy do they hurt like a motherfucker. Fortunately they’re harmless.

[–] sicarius@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

By Odins beard, thank you!
I've just been assuming someone's trying to voodoo me and almost getting there.
This is a great relief.

[–] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It could also be voodoo. I collect hair from barber shop dumpsters to make voodoo dolls to jab from time to time having no idea who it’s tied to. I’m not the only one doing it, either, there’s a pretty active discord community for it.

[–] sicarius@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Oh great, back to square one!
