Sometimes what you say/do isn't a reflection of your intentions and that's probably the only thing you should attempt to get across to your friends.

Something like: I screwed up.... I'm not exactly sure what I did, but I want to be clear that my intentions on my actions/what I said or did have never meant to be hurtful or harmful.
I would appreciate if someone let me know what this was- so that I could properly understand and apologize, because I'm currently clueless and need guidance.

For example quarterly taxes can be done over 3 payments instead of all at once, so you can basically adjust your budget accordingly & if it makes more sense to do it that way the option is open.
