I feel a major reason why people do this is, they don't want to waste time and effort going to one or two websites to actually know about something.

Honesty this is sad. Modern media are conditioning their brains for instant gratification and LLMs provide just that with quick and direct answers. But may not be the correct one. But people are willing to over look that fact.
