The European Commission put a 120M EUR fine on X for DSA violations. But as the European politicians cannot get themselves to leave the platform, it shows the issues with how they understand how power works on social platforms.

I have seen some critical views on Nostr as a part of decentralized network discussions, but most seem to be focused on culture not function.

What are the functional / protocol differences that make you prefer ActivityPub over Nostr?

Do they have any rule that says you need a minimum number of users on a site to fall under the law?

If servers of someinstance.co.au fine if they move to hosting in Finland?

It just feels like a nightmare.

Hello, I am a person who has only used thread based "social media" their whole life. I never liked platforms such as twitter and instagram and preferred aggregators like reddit, and nowadays, lemmy.

I tried joining twitter once, failed, closed my account and went back to reddit. Same with instagram. Kind of glad that I did not use them.

I recently created an instagram account because my friends use it's messaging feature. And because my generation uses instagram handles like phone numbers of old (i am 20).

I really want an active mastodon account. There are really cool people there and there are some thoughts I can't express with the "forum format".

I mostly repost cool stuff I see, but even after joining a reasonable amount of discourse, and trying not to look like a bot, I am yet to get a workable amount of social circle. Whereas I easily fit into places like lemmy.

I noticed Bonfire is getting a lot of positive attention lately, and I wanted to try it out. They don't have a directory of instances yet. Do you have any instances that you recommend.

I tried updating, checking spam, resending, nothing ever sends me the email (using keemail.me (tutanota)).

1. What is an Antenna?
2. Can I myself create a Warning to post at my profile?
3. Can only the channels creators post on them? Because for what I een, others can comment on them.
4. What is a play?

7. Is there something alike tags to posts? I liked that on tumblr.

Holos is a new project to run an ActivityPub server on your mobile phone, more on Thread's user statistics, and an interview with Mastodon's creator Eugen Rochko.

Been reading some docs and felt like drawing to get a better picture.

Some things to note:

• Parenthesis indicate bridges
• Fed Bridgy and Mostr appear twice because I don't know if they allow cross-communication
• One-way arrows (→) indicate one-way communication, and two-ways arrows (⇄) indicate the two sides can talk with each other
• Threads to/from Facebook and Instagram communication appears with an interrogation mark because the information I could find didn't feel conclusive and I don't have an account to test myself
• Maybe I missed some bridges and protocols, but that'd be more of a lack of knowing; also intentionally ignored X/Twitter > Nitter > RSS > ActicityPub bridges because it felt too much of a stretch.

The Fediverse is the network and NOSTR is one of its protocols.

I've heard that lemmy and mastodon instances can be federated so that they can be accessed from each other, but i'm not sure how to use that to access mastodon instances from lemmy. I've tried doing research and found ways to access lemmy instances from mastodon but not the other way. Any help would be appreciated.

I think one of the issues with federated forums like Lemmy is that multiple communities of the same name can exist on different instances. I do think that overall that's a good thing, as it encourages the decentralized governance of communities, depending on the instance, but it also leads to a general fracturing, since you may only be subscribed to one of the many instances of a particular community, and need to subscribe to all of the ever growing list of communities with that name if you want to see all posts across the fediverse.

I'm not even sure if it would be possible, but what I am suggesting is the ability to consolidate all communities of a particular name into a single super community. So for example this post would show up in the super feed of the larger fediverse community, and rather than subscribing to a single instance, such as fediverse@lemmy.world, you could subscribe to just a single super community called "c/fediverse", which would allow you to both view all posts in those communities with that name at the same time, and see all of those posts in your feed as well.

Addressing a couple issues I could foresee, this could be an opt in system, such that communities are not automatically consolidated into the super community feed without consent, but they could check a box when setting it up to make it possible. Also, if a user or instance is blocked from another user or instance, posts from that community would need to still not show up in the super community feed.

Does this make sense? Is it even technically feasible? What sorts of obstacles exist to implementing something like this?

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about PeerTube, Loops, Bandwagon, and other platforms in the Fediverse that are geared around artists. I might get flamed for this, and you’re welcome to disagree, but I think the network is in dire need of having support for commerce.

Not “Big Capitalism” commerce, but the ability for people to buy and sell things, support projects, and commission their favorite creators to keep making more stuff.

Mastodon next release features

Threads have been gaining traction recently and I’m actually enjoying the atmosphere there. However it’s clearly on a growth phase where they don’t show any ads or paid content. This obviously won’t last, so I’m wondering if there’s a platform which I could recommend?

I tried Mastodon a couple of years ago but it felt a bit too technical even for me, so I’m a bit hesitant to explore that. Thanks for any input and my apologies if this has been asked too many times already.
