I read an article that suggests classified ads used to support newspapers and hard journalism, and the Internet and sites like Craigslist took away that revenue to pay reporters.

Yep that's pretty much how it went. Also print ads have lost against digital ads, which pay way less money to publishers and keep paying less each year
