This is a direct admission that Trump is gonna die soon

Fingers crossed! JD will not be as batshit. He wants to keep the job and not get bounced from the top spot next election.

[–] grte@lemmy.ca 121 points 3 days ago (6 children)

JD will not be as batshit.

Considering his connections to Peter Thiel I'm not so sure about that. But what matters is that he won't be able to wield the cult of personality that has formed around Trump the way Trump can.

[–] Yawweee877h444@lemmy.world 61 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Exactly.

JD is scary due to the thiel connection.

He's very unlikable though imo. He doesn't have the charisma trump has (not genuine charisma, but like an arrogant bullying charisma that MAGA is attracted to). Hopefully this alone would work against him.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 43 points 3 days ago (1 children)

He basically radiates the Jeb Bush please clap awkwardness at all times.

[–] Justas@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

Some people, mostly jokingly, think that the timeline where Jeb Bush got elected president is the best timeline. JD Vance's would be the worst.

[–] Vorticity@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

To be fair, though, Trump is deeply unlikable for many people. I've had almost a physical reaction to hearing him speak or seeing him since his debates against Hillary. He's always seemed gross and slimy to me.

In other words, just because you and I see JD as unlikable doesn't mean that MAGA will also find him unlikable. In fact, Vance's approval rating among republicans is 89% favorable while among democrats it is 3% favorable as of the beginning of August.

Yeah well he also doesn't have the full responsibility of this admins actions either.

Once he's the lightning rod for this unpopular crap he'll have nowhere to hide.

[–] waddle_dee@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

This, this, this! Trump attracts people in a unique way, the same way that Hitler attracted people. Vance doesn't have that charisma. His ascension would fracture the party. There's folks who are willing to buck him, not Trump. It is the best shot we have at normalcy.

I hope you are right, but I don’t know MAGA won’t latch onto a new cult of personality just as easily. The right wing info bubble is a well oiled consent machine and they know how to push the right cultural buttons. Vance is better spoken and has gained a lot of MAGA love under Trump. I worry if Trump dies before he erodes his support too far, it will solidify MAGA under a better equipped leader.

[–] 474D@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

I see people keep saying this but why does it even matter anymore? They already have the power, they already tested camps, they already have troops deployed, he can do what he wants and still control the narrative like they are now

[–] Feyd@programming.dev 3 points 3 days ago (2 children)

People keep saying MAGA falls apart when Trump dies, but what I'm not seeing is what people think all these supporters will do? Surely we're not thinking they'll suddenly deconvert until reasonable people or even what used to be Republicans.

If we're really honest, this is what the Republican party has been building up to for decades. I'm trying to see the optimism that they'll just go back in the box but I'm just not seeing it

[–] phdepressed@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago

I'm not optimistic about them "going back in the box" as it were but that fracture into competing factions will allow more reasonable leaders to get it. Kinda how Bernie was winning before moderates unified behind Biden but sorta in reverse.

Trump won the R primary in 2016 and 2024 because the others didn't unify.

[–] Vorticity@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

I don't think they'll deconvert. I do hope they will become apathetic without their "charismatic" leader. I don't think Vance will be able to hold people's attention as well or rile them up to the same degree.

Side note: Calling Trump "charismatic" makes me want to vomit, but apparently he is for some people...

Even if that’s true, it only means the slow and steady decline of the country instead of the rapid spiral.
