Chili pepper was used in Europe (including UK) in Victorian times. It was well known and used in Europe by the 18th century. It was believed to have medicinal properties, but was also used in cooking.
...so you're telling me that Victorians enjoyed spicy curry?.. I don't buy it...
They've been eating curry since the Georgian era.
They enjoyed various spices, but not what you would get in a modern curry house. The influence of Indian cooking was already there though in kedgeree and mulligatawny soup, for example. (Both are still common today)
