From Charlie Barnett

"My favorite position is 68. She does me and I owe her one."

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 20 points 1 week ago

69 is eternal, or at least as long as Arabic numerals remain in use. 67 does not replace 69, it lives alongside it. But 69 will outlast it. It was first referenced in 1790 https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/69/ and will be repeatedly rediscovered by future generations

I think its whole thing is that it doesn't really mean anything; it's literally just an empty trigger word

[–] Souroak@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 week ago

No soap radio.

[–] DarkAri@lemmy.blahaj.zone 28 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I asked my nine year old daughter, and she said it doesn't mean anything, it's just brain rot to confuse the adults.

[–] ugo@feddit.it 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Joke’s on your daughter, I am already confused.

[–] DarkAri@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago

Knowing is half the battle.

[–] ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It originates from a discussion about a guy's height, he was 6 foot 7 inches. However, that's not really important to how it's used, it's just a mindless phrase to say.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

It originates from "Doot Doot" by Skrilla [Dec '24], got associated with LaMelo Ball (basketball player), hijacked and force-memed by Taylen Kinney (basketball player, hand gesture starts here) [Jan '25], kids chasing highlight reel clout start doing this at games and Maverick Trevillian (the blonde kid in the memes) gets lucky [March '25]. Full-steam-ahead brainrot evolution from there, memes referencing memes with none of the original layers of context.

he was 6 foot 7 inches

So that is why it's not a thing in Europe.

[–] falseWhite@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

All the fun numbers were already taken by previous generations, so I guess they had to come up with something, even if it's completely meaningless

[–] MourningDove@lemmy.zip 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

If a joke relies on having no meaning to be funny, it’s neither a joke, or funny.

Jokes be subjective my man. What's funny to you is not to me and vice versa. So nonsense jokes exist, but you don't find them funny, doesn't mean it's not a joke, or funny to some. Whole web comics have been built on the premise. look up the white ninja. I find him hilarious.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It isn't no meaning tho...

And if kids laugh at it and it's just being silly who cares? What are you the funny police?

[–] MourningDove@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah? Okay. What does it mean then?

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's a meme of a rap song of a someone saying that a guy plays like he's 6'7" even though he is 6'2".

It caught on because the rap song does the motion with the hands and the kids just find it funny.

[–] MourningDove@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Right. And the other comments where people say that even their kids have no idea what it means, they just say it to be funny….

They’re lying?

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Google is a thing. It's not like some hidden secret. I knew about it months ago because I coach youth baseball and looked it up to make sure my kids weren't saying something bad.

67 is a near homophone to a curse word in cantonese:

碌柒 meaning dickhead

As a native Cantonese speaker, this will always be my official meaning for this

[–] Jolteon@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

I'm gonna start spreading this around. It's much better than the existing definition.

[–] daggermoon@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

You're one of my favorite Lemmy users.

How's the old joke go? 67 69ed 68

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Makes me miss my grandparents.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I'll always remember their big dusty fishbowl with the outlines of all the keys.

casual racism intensifies

[–] inkzombie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 week ago

Isn't the joke "because 7 8 9" older than both?

[–] christov@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] Worx@lemmynsfw.com 6 points 1 week ago

Why was 66 scared of 67? Because 67 68 69

Gotta love 67. It’s so ubiquitous it’s become meaningless. From basketball to 67 kid, it’s pretty much whatever anyone wants it to be.

[–] Generica@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Im so high i was like, who were the 67th and 69th presidents?

42 sitting in the corner

[–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (5 children)

At least 67 isn't a sex thing.

[–] far_university1990@reddthat.com 56 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not with that attitude >:)

[–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Fair enough.

[–] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 27 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Eww, sex! Get it away from me!

In cantonese 67 sounds like euphemism for dick.

I don't get what the annoyance is with "6-7". I've been using it for years and it just means "approximately" or "thereabouts".

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 39 points 1 week ago

The way my kids use it, it doesn't mean anything. They just say it randomly in a drawn out voice.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 13 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Can you use it in a sentence?

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'll be there approximately 6-7 thereabouts.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

That doesn't sound like you're using it to mean "thereabouts" given that you have the word "thereabouts" in the sentence...
