What’s with this meme trend of sticking a “funny” phrase over a random celebrity’s picture? Does that get more eyeballs?

These are Whispers, which is an app that lets you post anonymously but all posts must have a background photo (that I think you choose from the Whisper database), which is why there's a ton of random memes with random photos behind them. Also, Dexter-related memes are currently hot, and that's Dexter himself, so it's not quite so random.

EDIT: These may have come from Pinterest as well, I've seen a lot on there like that when looking them up

How is this Dexter-related?

[–] VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 1 week ago

The text is not, the photo of Michael C Hall is. Mainstream memes are largely connected by phrases and iconography, e.g. YouTube comments.

But it'll feel like a decade.

I just hope that when the nukes go off I'm in the city center so I get fucking vaporised

Well, I think 2026 is going to be a good year for my career. I'm almost done with my thesis, so I expect to start 2026 by getting my bachelor. From there, I'll see what happens, but at least it opens up a lot of oppertunities.

Well a bunch assholes voted in a mentally stunted rapist that is hell bent on fucking the world's economy because they felt richer four year before. Now there are people disappearing from the streets. There isn't too much to be hopeful for.

Yeah for the US at least this is like asking a European in 1939 to be excited for the coming year lmao

[–] daggermoon@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

I've been scared since I was a teenager.

[–] Siethron@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's not even December yet

[–] ooli3@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 week ago

plenty of time to be even more scared

[–] stupidcasey@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Lesson learned.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 week ago

Well i expect it's gonna be a bad year, so i'm gonna say 2027 is gonna be my year.

[–] Contentedness@lemmy.nz 10 points 1 week ago

I'll be 44 years old and going back studying full time in February, definitely need a career change so I'm pretty excited about it to be honest!

[–] kittenzrulz123@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Unironically 2026 is gonna be my year, specifically the year my city gets a socialist mayor, public transportation becomes free, I start taking HRT, and I start Uni :3

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 3 points 1 week ago

Nice!

University years really are some of the best in life. Looking back, I appreciate these times a lot.

Not to mention finally seeing your body to be how you like it to be! It's exciting for everyone.

Good luck on your journeys!

What does Dexter have to do with any of this?

I have not had a year that is, was, or was going to be "my year" by intent, circumstance, or result, in any way, shape, or form, ever.

It just hasn't happened to me.

I've never expected it to happen, I've never tried to make it happen. 2026 will be no different than the hell we've been dealing with for the last 10+ years. In fact, it will most likely be worse than previous years.

My year was 2024, now I get to pay for it till 2030

[–] Una@europe.pub 5 points 1 week ago

Kinda, but I'll make 2026 be scared of me

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Progressive movement’s year!

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

fuck...i hope, we either get prog wave or nazi america.

If we call it Amerazi, at least the descent into madness sounds fun

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I dunno. Linux is finally having a moment, so maybe anything's possible.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

The only times I did this was 2015, 2018, and 2020 (I'd rather not explain about the first two aforementioned years, but 2020 certainly doesn't need explaining). But in general, I am the "go with the flow" kind of person, so expecting that next year will be better is something I haven't thought of.

[–] Heikki2@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I thought it once but reared it still too soon

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Why yes, I am.

Holy shit the next year posts are already here.
