About 70-90% of my days are "buy nothing" days.

Nobs

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Same, I thought "I can do a week, at the very least." Rookie numbers.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Easily a week.

A month would be pushing it before I get a new actually sizable chest freezer.

Don't make it just a day, make it a way of life. Reject consumerism, a single day isn't enough.just

Do your part to damage their economy. Reduce consumption, fix what you can and look at reuse/refurbishment where possible. Saves you money and hurts their profits.

Funny enough, I just got off a cruise today and the bill was $10. Pretty close!!

Black Friday isn't even a thing in Europe, yet I've been seeing adverts for for almost a month now, with two week long "sales" to generously allow us not to miss out.

south america is the same and the discounts are not even real most of the time.

we pay half off of double the price. its probably the worst time to buy shit.

It's even worse in Australia. A long while back we had a really bad bushfire that resulted in something like 70 people dying called black Friday. More recently we had a bushfire that resulted in over 150 people dying and 400 injured called black Saturday

It's honestly insulting to see these corporations come in and have these black Friday sales, showing that they don't care or respect for the history of Australia or its people, all while they flaunt the masquerade of "It's for you!!!"

I’m an American living in Canada. Black Friday happens here and it’s really weird to me. In the USA, it happens the day after Thanksgiving, which always falls on a Thursday. So Black Friday makes sense because many people have Friday off (or take it off) and so they have a day to shop for the upcoming holiday season.

In Canada, Thanksgiving does not happen on the same day as in the USA. It happens on a Monday in October. But Black Friday still happens the day after American thanksgiving, which is basically just a random Friday in November for Canadians.

The only thing I will mention is that I don’t know of any Canadian who lines up outside stores for them to open so they can snatch a crappy deal on a TV. I’m sure it happens, but I think most Canadians just need to go to work.

With "deals" that don't even look like deals to begin with

Me, celebrating:

I unfortunately am in the middle of a huge renovation for a new house I just bought 3 week ago. I guess I'm fucking up big time but I've had to buy quite a bit of stuff this week. My dryer broke, dishwasher shit out, heater went kaputs, I needed some lumber to keep my porch from caving in.

At least the only new thing I bought was the dishwasher because the panel to get it working would've cost me $200 since it's so old. Everything else has been fixed instead of replaced.

its ok. i got groceries today. stupid flesh prison and its need for food. i do what i can eh

It used to be the time to buy TVs because they would get heavily discounted like 80% to make way for new stock. I got an xbox 360 for $50 on black friday. Kind of made sense, but I usually stayed home just to avoid the crowds unless I heard of a sweet deal.

I’m not super in touch with these things, but it feels like over the years the deals have gotten worse and worse. Now it’s like 10% off sales, or they mark stuff up 50% then give a price cut to balance it back to full price.

It’s bizarre to me people still get so invested in it. Like they have been wired to think “OK, time for the shopping day. We must go consume. Think of something to buy while I get my coat.” Maybe the deals are good but I’m just too disinterested to find out, idk.

[–] booly@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago

The base price of TVs have gotten so cheap that in terms of absolute savings, even a true 50% discount wouldn't seem like a big deal.

30 years ago, when a big screen TV might cost the same as 3 months rent in a 3 bedroom apartment, getting 50% off was like getting 1.5 months rent. Now, when a big TV costs less than a quarter of a month's rent for a studio apartment, getting 50% off a TV is like getting 3 days rent.

Modern life is expensive because of housing, not because of stuff. Giving us better prices on stuff doesn't even help make this life more affordable.

[–] LH0ezVT@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

I checked some TV prices here, just for fun and since I was in the city anyway. They doubled the price as compared to the regular online price and then put on a 50% discount.

Already my plan, mostly because I'm broke but still participating.

[–] brown567@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

I bought ingredients to make succotash, but I'm sure as heck not getting any non-food items

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 4 points 1 week ago

I'm just not buyin' it!

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I bought FO4 off GOG a couple of days ago, because I'm fucking tired of Steam breaking my game every few weeks with mandatory updates, I think it was on sale for black friday. If that doesn't count, then count me in.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I thought you could disable updates on specific steam games. No?

[–] Zoot@reddthat.com 1 points 5 days ago
[–] Hossenfeffer@feddit.uk 3 points 1 week ago

Oh crap, I bought some bin bags. I don’t think they were on sale though.

[–] hark@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I like to buy the least I can every day. If the economy relied on my purchasing habits, it would collapse.
