"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

These movies aren't my favorite or anything; just the one's I've seen. I also found a chronological list of movies on IMBD.

I, Robot(2004): An original script called Hardwired that Fox stitched Asimov quotes. Decent action movie that explores how robotic AGI could change society. video synopsis w/ spoilers

The Animatrix(2003): A series of animated short films that prequel The Matrix Trilogy. It draws parallels between real-life historical events and a future where human labour is outsourced to robots. video synopsis w/ spoilers

The Matrix Trilogy (1999 - 2023): Critically acclaimed, hyperbolic action films that explore a future where AGI enslaves humanity. video synopsis w/ spoilers

Bicentennail Man (1999): An Asimov adaptation starring Robin Williams. An emotional exploration of the essence of humanity using the mirror of artificial intelligence. video synopsis w/ spoilers

HER (2013): A highly prescient and some what's disturbing film about falling in love with an AI video synopsis w/ spoilers

I would add Ex Machina to that list as well both for the creepy developer and the actual implications of the ending.

Came here to add this.

Ty. I haven't seen that one.

[–] noughtnaut@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

It was a decent film. I would REALLY like to know how the next few days went though!!

Although not explicitly AI, the movie WarGames come to mind.

Blade Runner? Not AI per se, but close.

Star Trek TOS episode A Taste Of Armaggedon In the episode, the crew of the Enterprise visits a planet engaged in a completely computer-simulated war with a neighboring planet, but the casualties, including the Enterprise's crew, are supposed to be real.

Woahhh that's a trippy episode concept! Only seen about have of TOS so thanks for sharing!

Another one is "The Ultimate Computer," where they replace Kirk as captain of the Enterprise with a new computer system

Colossus: The Forbin Project.

Demon Seed. We knew it was a bad idea all the way back in 1977

Ex-Machina (2014). A tech billionaire recruits a young programmer to come to his remote compound to test his new AI android called Ava. The test is whether Ava can convince the protagonist that she's a real person, despite visibly being a robot.

Ava then proceedes to fuck with everyone, manipulating people into carrying out her escape plan.

It's a psychological thriller and it's quite good imo. It definitely has a lot to say about the dangers of AI.

Never seen it ty.

Question: Was south park referencing that movie when they did the whole "ad/Leslie" thing and Jimmy?

Short Circuit (1986) Number 5, one of a group of experimental military robots, undergoes a sudden transformation after being struck by lightning. He develops self-awareness, consciousness, and a fear of the reprogramming that awaits him back at the factory. With the help of a young woman, Number 5 tries to evade capture and convince his creator that he has truly become alive.

It’s a comedy, but the outcome could’ve been different.

I think Robocop(1987) might be a foreshadowing movie here soon.

Another classic I never got around to seeing!

I knew I could count on you guys!

AI (2001) A robotic boy, the first programmed to love, is adopted as a test case by a Cybertronics employee and his wife. Though he gradually becomes their child, a series of unexpected circumstances make this life impossible.

Ex-Machina (2014) A programmer learns that he has been chosen to be the human component in a Turing test to determine the capabilities and consciousness of Ava, a robot. However, it soon becomes evident that Ava is far more self-aware and deceptive than either man imagined

Star Trek The Motion Picture, V`Ger

Its been a while since I watched it but the Animatrix seemed to heavily imply the first sin with machines wasn't creating them, it was exploiting them as a slave class once they had become outright sapient.

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

The robots were programmed to be sapient but violence and abuse drove them to revolt. One scene in particular can only be described as Kristallnacht.

2001 Space Odissey, Demon Seed,

Metropolis - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolis_(1927_film)

This "AI" fantasy has been around for a loooong time.

I wonder how long it's been since the very first time someone conceptualized artificial intelligence.
