Doesn't work, you can shim that thing right off and get a free grenade!

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 50 points 1 month ago (3 children)

But the thief is lockpicking lawyer, might actually defuse the grenade as well.

[–] spankinspinach@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

Afterwards providing a few comments about why the Whipit brand hand grenades are easily defeated. But never quite telling you which brand of hand grenade he would recommend (Grenadables, obvs)

[–] VinnyDaCat@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Haven't heard that name in a while. He used to help people with their homework on reddit, it'd be cool if he came over here.

If my knowledge about grenades from videogames is correct, you can just put a pin back in, if you kept the handle closed since pulling the pin.

[–] Baphomet_The_Blasphemer@lemmy.world 26 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The grenade ring is just like a key ring. Hold spoon, pull pin, twist ring off the lock, re-pin grenade, walk away with your new grenade, and enjoy.

That's a lot of trust on my butter fingers while trying to manipulate tools with my other hand...

[–] dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

How is he gonna manipulate tools with some tape?

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 20 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The weak-willed see a deterrent, while the enterprising see a guaranteed way to get rid of the lock.

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago

But probably the bike too. This is really the most fun for people who want neither a bike nor a grenade, and also don't want OTHER people to have either of those things. I can't remember which logical operation that is, NAND?

[–] Crozekiel@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I don't understand... If you get the lock off of the bike, then you get the lock off the grenade pin, no? What am I missing? Or is the idea that they don't notice this whole thing and try to ride off and that automatically primes and drops the grenade? Then you still don't have a bike. I don't get it. :/

[–] semperverus@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

"If I can't have it, they can't either"

[–] clif@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I'm with you...

Cut the lock shackle, remove lock from brake and ring... Nothing happens??

Or if you're paranoid, cut the grenade ring first, then cut the lock.

Is this what the kids mean by "no cap"?

[–] Sparky@lemmy.blahaj.zone 18 points 1 month ago

The design is very human

[–] Sxan@piefed.zip 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Great way to get your bike stolen by cops.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 11 points 1 month ago

Hello, this is the Lockpicking Lawyer, and today we're going to get spicy

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Just hold the spoon down and put the pin back in after?

[–] IphtashuFitz@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Just wrap tape around it to hold the spoon in place, pull the pin, leave the taped grenade, and take the bike.

[–] crank0271@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And pass up the free grenade??

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, screw the bike, I want the grenade!

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Bike's worth a few hundred dollars tops at a pawn shop, whereas a grenade can get you a hundred thousand dollars out of the nearest bank.

[–] spankinspinach@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

And if you don't throw it, a few other banks as well.

*Pending police interest

[–] realitista@lemmus.org 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Does it work though...? I don't see any way that the pin for the grenade comes out when you cut the lock. Am I missing something?

[–] kdcd@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

Just throw it

[–] Bonus@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

When the thief cuts the lock, the falling grenade might stub their toe.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I'm pretty sure this is illegal.

[–] MacNCheezus@lemmy.today 1 points 1 month ago

Perhaps, but it might be illegal

[–] notarobot@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

If the lock passes inside the frame, then the thieve would just keep riding and leave behind a ticking granade. Possibly without even knowing

[–] Lupus@feddit.org 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Possibly without even knowing

Not for long though. I give it about 3-5 seconds until the thief would notice. Probably the last thing they will ever notice.

[–] notarobot@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't know the range of a grenade, but I imagine when one steals a bike, they run away. Maybe they can be out of range in 5 seconds

[–] Lupus@feddit.org 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Depends, usual lethal radius between 5-25m, some shrapnel might be lethal beyond that. If you start driving slowly and accelerate moderately you might geht caught by some shrapnel.

Anyways, the thief would definitely notice the explosion. You would notice several blocks away.

[–] notarobot@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They would hear the explosion but not think "wow. There was a grenade attached to the bike"

Anyway. I forgot bikes have breaks, so the lock would not pass that and the grenade would not self arm

This is on the disc brake, so the grenade would drop as soon as you ride away since it would not fit between the frame and the wheel, dropping the pin and exploding the grenade probably before they have a chance to run.

[–] JayleneSlide@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Frame? Has to pass through the caliper, which it won't.

[–] notarobot@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago

Oh. Right. The breaks. I forgot. Nvm
