There ought to be a legal fund for these deepfake lawsuits so we can sue every one of these scummy companies out of existence. I'd donate to it.

I'd like the bubble to be true so that we can move past this nonsense phase, and it may well be true, but I could also see it being extended for years potentially, since there's so much money being pumped into it, and governments are also buying into the hype.

Just Uncomplicated Socialist Tech

This feels a lot like US border patrol intimidation. Sad to see it in Canada

You and I are not at odds, friend. I think you're assuming I want to ban the technology out right. It's possible to call out the issues with something without being wholly against it. I'm sure you would want to prevent these deaths as well.

A friendly human spell checked me and probably used less than a peanut worth of energy.

Whoops. Fixed, thanks.

I didn't intentionally limit myself to north america, but it's possible my searches are implicitly limited to north america. It could also be that the average north american has had more access to ChatGPT than the rest of the world, or that suicides are hard to link to ChatGPT, or they go unreported or unlitigated in other parts of the world

Went ahead and registered the domain anyway. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks, I agree most normies wouldn't use the term LLM, but I did want to be specific. If I were to use the aideathcount domain, I'd want to collect a broader list of news articles first, but that may be difficult to search for.

Pesky word-wrapping got me on narrow screens. Thanks for the QA. :)

I'm ditching YouTube and cancelled my Premium account because they recently purged videos and accounts of Palestinian human rights organizations, and I'm generally trying to boycott the US and Google further.

I'm switching to podcasts to give myself something to listen to instead. I found CBC Podcasts and TVO Podcasts. I also found this Lemmy thread from 2 years ago, but I'd figure it's time to ask the community again.

What are your suggestions for Canadian or non-US podcasts?

National Science Foundation (NSF) had offered $1.5 million to address structural vulnerabilities in Python and the Python Package Index (PyPI), but the Foundation quickly became dispirited with the terms of the grant it would have to follow.

"These terms included affirming the statement that we 'do not, and will not during the term of this financial assistance award, operate any programs that advance or promote DEI [diversity, equity, and inclusion], or discriminatory equity ideology in violation of Federal anti-discrimination laws,'" Crary noted. "This restriction would apply not only to the security work directly funded by the grant, but to any and all activity of the PSF as a whole."

The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) is hosting a worker-first forum with official NDP leadership candidates. The forum will bring together Avi Lewis, Heather McPherson, Rob Ashton, Tanille Johnston, and Tony McQuail for a series of moderated discussions focused on their vision and leadership approach for Canada’s NDP.

The audio is low for the host's introduction, but gets better when the candidates are on the stage.

The Enemies Project helps "enemies" discover the human being in each other.

In each episode, the Enemies Project documentary pairs two people with fiercely opposing worldviews. Intense conflict, yes. But the Enemies Project is neither gotcha TV nor political debate. The purpose is for "enemies" to find the humanity in the other — because in a warring world, understanding is rebellion.

Episodes are hosted by renowned Peacemaker Larry Rosen.

They're running a Kickstarter Campaign here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/larryrosen/enemies-project-a-docuseries-where-enemies-become-human

This is the third time I'm seeing this type of political smear ad run via Google Ads, specifically through Google News on my phone's "Google Now" screen. The ads are supposedly paid for by Indian companies with nondescript names like "Thiess India Private Limited". The ad usually features an AI-generated image of a left-leaning politician appearing injured or in handcuffs. I've seen doctored images of Jagmeet Singh and Mark Carney so far. This particular ad pointed to a fake website setup to look identical to a CBC News article, with more misinformation. I've reported this to Google, CBC, and The Walrus.

I'm still learning more about Yves, but I like what I've seen so far. Apparently some people are calling for him to be blocked from the leadership race because of his pro-palestine, anti-zionist, and anti-genocide views. Contrary to their complaints, he is not antisemitic.

Yves Engler’s campaign for the leadership of the New Democratic Party represents a defining moment in Canadian politics. For too long, the NDP has drifted toward centrism, attempting to appease corporate interests and mainstream media narratives rather than boldly representing the working class. Engler’s vision is different. He stands unapologetically for democratic socialism — a society rooted in economic justice, peace, democracy, and the empowerment of working people.

On Saturday, September 20th, we're drawing the line - for People. For Peace. For the Planet.

From rallies to strikes, marches to gatherings, this September 20th, communities will mobilize across the country and demand that Prime Minister Carney and the Canadian government pick a side: injustice, violence, and climate destruction- or a just and safe future for all of us.

We refuse to stand by while the government and Canada's richest corporations hoard wealth, gut our public services, fuel climate collapse, attack migrants, exploit Indigenous lands, and prop up a genocide in Palestine.

They think that if they can overwhelm and divide us, we won't fight back. But climate justice, migrant justice, economic justice, Indigenous rights, and anti-war movements are uniting to prove them wrong.

The Trump administration recently published "America's AI Action Plan". One of the first policy actions from the document is to eliminate references to misinformation, diversity, equity, inclusion, and climate change from the NIST's AI Risk Framework.

Lacking any sense of irony, the very next point states LLM developers should ensure their systems are "objective and free from top-down ideological bias".

Par for the course for Trump and his cronies, but the world should know what kind of AI the US wants to build.
