For me, Ubuntu still lives up to the moniker of "pre-configured Debian". I like using it on servers, but on desktops I find there is lots of initial config it requires.

I looked real hard but I don't see loss

I am happy to be so easily disproven! Thank you!

In the past I would have said Ubuntu, then kubuntu, but I have had problems lately with things not "just working" because they were installed as a snap.

If I had to recommend something, I would still recommend Ubuntu because of the community, and the ui being generally well polished.

Biblically know? Sure, technically.

This is why when people tell me that Linux Mint is user-friendly, I usually assume they don't use it themselves.

What kind of leash?

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 6 days ago

I have no idea how any of this is different. Sudo does things as root. Sudo -i logs you in as root where you can do things. So if there is a difference it is v subtle.

Not everything is all about you, dude.

It must depend on the area of the country; we never hear about the bible. But we have heard from Pagans and Zen Buddhists.

Opened my gallery app and had to doubletake.

Alt-text: a confusing array of memes.

Alt text: Space! We are witnessing an alien on the right side surrounded by purple-pink fog. It is tending its attention to the rather cold universe. This creature is a creator, guardian, and protector of the planets holding and spending time with each new world. There is no rush. Good things take time to evolve. We can see several tiny planets floating in a sacred and ancient ocean. Every globe has a good start for building a new world for unknown civilizations. The planets will leave this protected space once they reach their unique temperature and atmosphere. This way all variations of different lifeforms can exist, helping each other to reach their full potential. In the background, we can see one of the planets heading into space. It will return to the galaxy ocean when its time has come in a billion years.

That ain't no crime

So October is coming, and this is as good a time as any to switch to linux, but it is somewhat of an overwhelming task. I'm already used to desktop linux, but I am NOT good at migrating apps and settings and stuff. So I'll have some blindspots. I thought perhaps we could come up with some kind of collaborative outline for how to do it. Here are my ideas.

  • Make backups of all data.
  • Install linux as a dual boot / new machine.
  • Troubleshoot any hardware / software issues.
  • Make some lists on windows of apps
-- Apps you absolutely need to have / replace
-- Apps that would be nice to have / replace
-- Apps that you don't need to migrate over.
  • Migrate user data, files, etc., to linux
  • Install apps on linux
  • For each app on the lists
-- export settings and data from windows
-- import settings and data into linux

At each step along the way, you can check things off the list.

Not everyone can switch to linux, but for those who want to, would this be a good procedure? What would you add to it?
