“It’s a strange thing to find myself more shocked now than at things that the Harper government tried,” said Green MP Elizabeth May, moments before her audio was cut off for the vote to begin, sending the approved bill to the Senate for its final debate.

The law allows government to scrap almost any federal law or regulation standing in a chosen project’s way, and to pre-approve projects without any review or consent from First Nations. And once those decisions are made, they are final.

Cresting on a wave of Conservative and Liberal support, Bill C-5 pushed against fierce opposition from First Nations, the NDP, Bloc Québécois, Greens and environmental groups who say the law contravenes hard-won gains on Indigenous rights and environmental protection.

“It is really astonishing how quickly this bill has been drafted and then how quickly it is going through Parliament,” said West Coast Environmental Law staff lawyer Anna Johnston. “They’re talking about reinventing the decision-making and regulatory processes for major projects.”

A Calgary police officer who assaulted an intoxicated, handcuffed Indigenous man by grabbing him by the hair and throwing him to the ground apologized to his victim in court on Monday both publicly and privately before he was handed a one-year, at-home sentence.

Const. David Wilhelm pleaded guilty to assault in December. The judge described the incident as "completely out of character" for the 12-year Calgary Police Service (CPS) officer and his lawyer called the assault "a terrible mistake."

On Monday, Wilhelm was handed a one-year conditional sentence, meaning he will serve his sentence at home with the first half spent under house arrest and the second six months under a curfew. He must also complete 75 hours of community service.

Iran’s nuclear programme is a grave threat to international security, and Canada has been consistently clear that Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.

While U.S. military action taken last night was designed to alleviate that threat, the situation in the Middle East remains highly volatile. Stability in the region is a priority.

Canada calls on parties to return immediately to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis. As G7 leaders agreed in Kananaskis, the resolution of the Iranian crisis should lead to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza.

After more than 32,000 speeding tickets were handed out in just three weeks by new automated speed enforcement cameras in community safety zones, council in the City of Vaughan decided to pause the program.

Mayor Steven Del Duca put forward the motion last week to pause the tickets until September, when council is due to receive a report from staff on ways the city can create more effective signage about the presence of cameras.

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day to everyone. I know right now there is not much cause to celebrate with the passing of an Ontario government Bill 5 and Federal Government Bill C5 that directly threaten First Nation lands, people and rights.

We've always dealt with issues, events, changes and developments ... it's become our ongoing legacy to constantly fight and we are and will continue to fight on.

What everyone doesn't understand is that we are not just fighting for ourselves, its a fight to protect the future of our people and of all Ontario and all Canada as well. Unrestrained and uncontrolled resource development only destroys the land, air and water ... the same land, air and water we all share no matter our race, group or identity.

It's also a fight for the future, as from the quote from Wendell Berry ....

“We do not inherit the earth from our fathers, we are borrowing it from our children.”

The quote is often attributed as a wise old Native saying or proverb but in actual fact the modern quote comes from an environmentalist in the environmental, ecological movement.

Saying the environment to save ourselves and the future generations to come is not just an idea central to First Nation belief systems .... it's a belief system by those who can see beyond the length of their own lifespans.
