At the UN General Assembly this morning, Donald Trump said Cuba was a “failed state” that “will fall,” and immediately after accused the island of providing a haven for foreign adversaries to “threaten America” and cultivating ties with “subversive groups” like Communist Party USA, Antifa and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

Trump referenced the 100-page State Department report released in July that accused Cuba of influencing virtually every major progressive movement, organization, protest and activist in the United States over the last 65 years. (Even Belly of the Beast was mentioned in the report).

He also said Secretary of State Marco Rubio “is deep into negotiations with Cuba,” even though Cuban officials have said there is no progress in talks with the Trump administration due to unrelenting U.S. hostility.

Cuba’s UN delegation walked out while Trump spoke.

In an interview with PBS, Cuba’s Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío reiterated there has been “no progress” in talks between the Trump administration and the Cuban government due to unrelenting U.S. hostility.

He said U.S. policy is “collective punishment” meant to inflict economic pain on the Cuban people.

Saudi Arabia was notorious for hitting civilians in its bombing campaign in Yemen from 2015 to 2022, and the number of civilian casualties in the current war is rising. The Saudi airstrikes are supported by the US, which has up to 200 military advisors in Saudi Arabia providing intelligence and targeting support.

Trump administration attacks Australia's 'opt-out' algorithm law in rare intervention

In an extremely uncommon move, the US government has publicly criticised an Australian government policy proposal.

It wants US social media companies excluded from digital duty of care laws, which would give Australians the option to opt out of algorithmic feeds.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is in New York promoting Australian tech policies at the United Nations.

The Trump regime is preparing sweeping sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) in an attempt to destroy the world’s highest criminal court. The move is Donald Trump’s latest move to defend wanted Israeli war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu.

The sanctions would ban a majority of financial transactions with the court, isolating it from the US dollar and — if the global banking system capitulates as expected — from that too. Trump is expected to make a final decision during this week’s UN General Assembly gathering in New York City.

Trump has already abused US financial power to sanction the ICC president, judges and former chief prosecutor Karim Khan, as well as engineering Khan’s removal from his post, despite judges finding no evidence against him in sexual harassment allegations.

The US has previously said it would dismantle the ICC if it did not drop its charges against Netanyahu and other Israelis who have committed crimes against humanity.

The UK will provide ~~defensive~~ military support to Saudi Arabia against ~~attacks~~ retaliation from Yemen's ~~Iran-backed Houthi rebels~~ government, the prime minister has confirmed.

Speaking to reporters while travelling to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Andy Burnham said Saudi Arabia has requested support, "and on the advice of the defence secretary and the foreign secretary, last night I agreed to that request".

At least five Israeli-backed Palestinian militias are operating out of compounds in areas under Israeli military control across the Gaza Strip, according to satellite imagery and videos published online. Since the so-called ceasefire went into effect nearly a year ago, these compounds have been upgraded and expanded in size and sophistication, according to a preliminary analysis by Forensic Architecture. Many of these upgrades resemble Israeli military infrastructure, with berms, barracks, fences, and buildings. At least one compound in East Rafah includes new shops, classrooms, and a playground.

Many of the militia leaders who rose to power in collaboration with Israel during the genocide in Gaza are former gang leaders with a history of criminal activity, were associated with jihadi groups, or are former Palestinian Authority security forces that were all sidelined after Hamas gained control of the enclave in 2007.

Ten lions found dead in a wildlife reserve in Tanzania are suspected to have been poisoned, according to wildlife officials. The animals were discovered on Friday in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, home to pastoral tribal communities that raise cattle. It is also one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country.

"Preliminary findings suggest the animals may have died after ingesting poison," a statement from The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority said, adding the authority has launched a full investigation "to determine the cause of the incident and identify those responsible."

Large animals are under threat across East Africa, in places where they frequently come into conflict with humans. An investigation is underway in neighboring Kenya, where over the summer, 18 elephants died from suspected poisoning. Police have arrested four people.

According to Kenya's Wildlife Service, preliminary tests showed the elephants may have ingested cyanide. Tomato farmers in the Amboseli region are known to use banned pesticides on their crops. But growers deny using cyanide.

Tanzania is home to Africa's largest lion population, about half the world's wild lions. But they are listed as a vulnerable population by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Lions are under threat from shrinking habitat and poaching.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania is a UNESCO World Heritage Site protected under international law. It is the location of the Ngorongoro Crater and home to the Big Five game animals -–the elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino.

Helen Yaffe, professor of Latin American Political Economy at Glasgow University and author of We Are Cuba! How A Revolutionary People Have Survived in a Post-Soviet World, also joined the meeting online. She described in detail the “tightrope” Cuba is walking with the 176 economic reforms it is undertaking, emphasizing that they must be seen in the context of Cuba as a small island that is dependent on trade. The Cubans also need capital for infrastructure and social welfare, she added.

Yaffe said the new measures “are referred to quite rightly as liberalizing reforms. They are an economic imperative, but they do constitute a political risk.” The challenge, she emphasized, is how to get foreign capital without undermining sovereignty, or the project of building socialism. “Cubans are not for restoring capitalism!” she declared.
