first responder here who has seen a lot and also has exhaustion and depression .. yeah we joke about a lot that we “should not joke about.”

when i mention the 300lb guy on 3rd floor who died naked and covered in poo (his and animal) and how bogging it was to get him out .. I’m gonna joke. cause it’s .. helpful.

You should never joke about victims... In their presence

Joking about these things creates distance. That's very hurtful to people close to the subject, and very helpful to people who need that distance.

There's a difference, I feel. When you are the one in danger, you shouldn't joke about it, since nobody else can tell if it's meant to be a joke or if it's meant to be serious.

If you are an observer, I think it's still awkward to joke about it, but at least it's clear that it's meant to be a joke

yeah. dark humor is a thing and it helps. audience and context and timing are crucial but it helps. i might for instance joke with my crew or my therapist. but obviously never with the family, public, etc.
