Gay men who desired to pass as straight would marry a woman and such women were known as beards. Vance is married to an Indian woman but the rumor is he would like to divorce his wife and marry Erica Kirk. So its a double entendre: Vance is a gay man and he will divorce his 'brown' beard and marry one who is white.
in his alleged book, hillbilly ellergy, he asked his grandma about being gay, the grandma said "dont say such things, are you(vance) doing this or that, if not you are not gay"-paraphrased.
Thanks, the beards part was the context I was missing. I must've read the original comment a dozen times wondering why it was so funny to people.
