Smart people despise him
He's beneath contempt
The stupid love him, because they don't understand just what a failure he is
They can relate, because they understand nothing but bluster and aggression
They will forgive him anything, as long as he tells them that their hatred isn't just right, it's righteous
It's not gonna help the people who like him, but the contrapositive of that statement (which bears equivalent logical truth) is "people who like me aren't smart"
I don’t think it hurts them. They will acknowledge they aren’t the smartest, and they aren’t the richest. They see themselves as salt of the earth, real people, real Americans. “Smart” people are bad, not to be trusted. Like vaccines, and evolution, and higher education and book learnin’.

So what was the actual context of this? It's funny and true out of context, but I'm curious what the question was, or whatever it was that preceded this.

He's dumb enough to do so
And his cultists are dumb enough to let him get away with it even if they actually learned about it.
