Sponsorblock go brrr

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 1 points 8 hours ago

Wonder why the mattress folks have ads on a ton of the podcasts I listen to but it doesn't show up on yt much. You'd think a mattress ad would want a visual medium to display some features.

surprisef you know about the displate sponsorships, mabye i think they're rare because i use sponsorblock.

I've actually never seen an elgato sponsorship

[–] real_squids@sopuli.xyz 4 points 13 hours ago

It's when somebody's elgato stops working so their logo remains the only thing on the screen for a minute or so

Sponsor Block is one of the essential YouTube plugins. Thanks to that I don't know half of these companies.

[–] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 8 minutes ago

another option is to exclusively watch small youtube channels

[–] biggerbogboy@sh.itjust.works 6 points 17 hours ago

I love sponsor block, it works pretty much flawlessly apart from when YouTube recommends me a video from literally 30 seconds ago, which is surprisingly often that I can now count it on 2 hands as of the last time I got a scarily new video on my feed,

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 16 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

And Dearrow by the same creator.

[–] joelfromaus@aussie.zone 1 points 6 hours ago

It’s funny that DeArrow has lead to me watching more videos with super click bait titles. It’s almost as if actually using the content for the title instead of some vague notion or off content question is more likely to pick a video to watch.

I know there’s a reason channels do it but this is just my experience.

[–] Paddzr@lemmy.world 7 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

What's dearrow? Downsides?

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

It changes titles and thumbnails to remove clickbait. Seeing the youtube homepage without it is genuinely jarring--everyone is clawing at your attention. "Pick me, pick me!"

There are different options but i have it set so the thumbnail is a random frame from the video. I think titles are 'normalized' and sometimes community generated.

[–] sorrybookbroke@sh.itjust.works 10 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

It replaces the thumbnail with a more representative frame from the video (voted by users). The 'arrow' was in reference to a trend where people would put a big red arrow pointed at some shit as clickbait. This is meant to stop clickbait

[–] Paddzr@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago

Thanks, downloaded and bought it. Happy to pay for good software.

[–] Battle_Masker@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 11 hours ago

Is Magic Spoon still sponsoring web creators? Or did they stop when their cereal came to grocery stores?

[–] gergolippai@lemmy.world 72 points 1 day ago (2 children)

where's Ground News (yes i listen to boomer news commentary on youtube)

[–] hzl@piefed.blahaj.zone 18 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Also Rocket Money.

Spend money to save money without having to look at your own bank statements! Makes perfect sense!

This was put together by someone who doesn't watch any sports channels. Completely missing all the sports betting sponsors like Fanduel and Underdog.

Nebula is the youtubers advertising for their own platform. It's like "like and subscribe" or "subscribe to my patreon".

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org 10 points 22 hours ago

They are right anyway.

[–] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

And I have never ever used one of those services.

[–] CobblerScholar@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Got a set of Raycon headphones, they're fine but nothing special

[–] JamesBoeing737MAX@sopuli.xyz 3 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Dankpods heavily criticized them.

[–] CobblerScholar@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

I mean sure they arent good by any measure but for 70$ and after 4 years of near daily use in a shop with grinders and paint they've done what I needed them to, no complaints just no real complement either

Skillshare is there, next to Hello Fresh.

[–] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 5 points 15 hours ago

Oops. So used to skipping them I guess.

[–] zout@fedia.io 26 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I'm missing Betterhelp, that one really expensive safety razor, and Bambulab for makers.

[–] Flatfire@lemmy.ca 7 points 18 hours ago

PCBWay, the Raid Shadowlegends of electrical engineering projects

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 9 points 20 hours ago

Better help is so shitty that it makes me turn off a video when my sponsor block isn't working. Bambulab at least makes something "good".

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 12 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Hensson. It is a very good razor, just double the price of others

I'm proud to say that I block so many ads, this is the first time I'm seeing most of these names.

[–] JayGray91@piefed.social 18 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

These sponsors are more and more being baked in the video themselves and not part of the system youtube use. That's why I use sponsorblock to automatically skip the portions of the sponsors.

[–] RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com 15 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Did you really need to write this like you were sponsored

[–] JayGray91@piefed.social 5 points 16 hours ago

I swear it's unintentional

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 8 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (3 children)

You guys are seeing sponsors? Don't people use sponsorblock? I've never heard of (or seen) half these things.

[–] Decq@lemmy.world 7 points 19 hours ago

You would be surprised how many people still watch with the normal YouTube ads, so never mind sponsorsblock. I guess the big tech companies succeeded by dumbing everything down to bite-sized technologies. So many younger people can't even comprehend the notion of ad blockers. They are basically on the same level as boomers when it comes to tech literacy.

[–] 0tan0d@lemmy.world 4 points 18 hours ago

There are some creators who's content ads have the same effort as the rest of the content. As a heavy ad block user this is the only way for advertisers to reach me and im okay with it.

[–] protogen420@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 18 hours ago

sometimes there isnt labeled sponsor segments, I just usually skip increments of 30 seconds since most sponsor are either 30, 60 or 90 seconds

[–] PhobosAnomaly@feddit.uk 7 points 21 hours ago

I'd love to see the YouTube analytics of a handful of really popular videos that have embedded sponsors. Even before the "jump ahead" feature, there must be a massive drop-off of people who just skip five or ten seconds ahead until the sponsor isn't showing again.
