This joke is a fighter jet; it went over my head at breakneck speed.

Is this a pop culture reference?

Is it because they're showing their teeth and that's a threatening gesture among predators? Is it because they are particular characters from some other media? Is it because the camera flash turned their eyes red and that's scary?

[–] fibojoly@sh.itjust.works 22 points 5 months ago

All of it. I'm guessing the joke is that this alien is sheep based and all the signs you described would put us humans in the "scary predator aliens" category.

The teeth thing makes lots of sense especially if you've read the Cytoverse series. In it, there's an alien race that sees the showing of teeth as a sign of aggression or a sign of fear.

I think the very obvious murder in their eyes probably suggest a few dangers as well.

Yes plz send help. Furry ubiquity in the future something?

The logo on their chests is a US Space Force Logo, perhaps it’s an ICE parallel as he’s an illegal “alien” and their job is kinda like ICE but for space? Edit: also getting a little vibe of the torture/humiliation video that came out from Gitmo where the soldiers were enjoying themselves, and even a bit of the hostage videos that come out where they make the captive say how well they’re being treated etc.

[–] sircac@lemmy.world 14 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Captain? Why funny? I am at a loss like the others...

[–] Stamets@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 5 months ago (5 children)

I have no idea how everyone seems to have missed this.

Humans eat sheep.

In future humans find sheep people.

Sheep people think they're going to eat them.

Like...

That's a whole 'nother discussion.

It includes rainbow thigh-highs.

[–] sircac@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Mmh... I guess?

Some countries have military units with goat mascots, not for food but for morale, so, not really straightforward to me, honestly

So that is supposed to be a sheep? Thought it was like a hairy monkey.

And if it is supposed to be the future, why are they wearing modern armor?

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 2 points 5 months ago

I thought the danger was more... pornographic in nature

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

We've got sheep people at home.

I'm trying, I just need to finish inventorying them.

Reading the synopsis, it sounds like they mainly took the concept of "The Deathworlders" aka "The Kevin Jenkins Experience"

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 months ago

It's a whole genre called "Humans are Space Orcs"

[–] sundray@lemmus.org -1 points 5 months ago

Thanks for the link! Love the art, but I've got to admit the story sounds real depressing. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)

[–] knightly@pawb.social 1 points 5 months ago

NoP spotted in the wild! =D

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 1 points 5 months ago

Is it a llama?
