Summarizing:

  • it will now be impossible to unblur graphic imagery or adjust the content filter settings for your account until age verification is complete
  • Age-restricted channels and servers will be inaccessible
  • DMs from unknown users will be rerouted to a separate inbox
  • No speaking on server stages

Which, all sounds fine. However, who defines all of these things? Who defines graphic imagery? Is it straight up porn? Is it a meme that has a naughty word in it? Is it anime? We have no idea.

Also as a server owner (who has moved everyone to Matrix now), I pretty much had to set my private server to age restricted, otherwise the server gets penalized if one of my users uploads something that is "graphic imagery" which again, is defined by them. The only safe way previously ways to say "Hey, you should be over 18 to join this" and then I'm not liable. I worry about a lot of servers taking the easy way and saying the same.

Since discord is American company, expect them to tag "mature" on any LGBT+ content, erotic or not

They say they'll have some sort of AI analyzing what you say. That seems pretty invasive

[–] Midnitte@beehaw.org 10 points 4 hours ago

Also seems likely to go wrong in both directions...

I am zero surprised about this, and honestly expected it earlier. Sentiment analysis is incredibly simple. They get to claim "Oh we don't read your messages, they're private" but, AI isn't reading your messages, no one reads them, but it does summarize into a nice, easy to search set of tags so they can easily hand up what you're talking about to anyone who asks.

What about links? Can you just, link to the images?

Have an account almost 10 years and i'll gladly let it rot than give them my data.

~~The post is missing the link to the article~~

The link

It may be a issue with fedia, the instance I use.

Here's a link to the article

Or with Lemmy. I view it perfectly fine in Friendica

[–] GammaGames@beehaw.org 7 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

Yeah lemmy doesn’t usually play well when a post has both an image and a link

[–] mitram2@lemmy.pt 4 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

I don't think that's true, I have posts with both an image and a link. Might be an issue with the way both platforms implement the activityPub specification.

I’ve tried several times to create a link post with an image, but the links always get lost and only the image makes it

It could be something with federation, lots of moving parts!

[–] mitram2@lemmy.pt 4 points 4 hours ago

One of the few downsides to federation. The complexity.

[–] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 hours ago

Working fine on Piefed as well

I’m assuming that they’re going for an AI babysitter for those who won’t give our ID to a service who just leaked a bunch of them.

Idk how else they could deem what every posted jpg is, sfw vs nsfw or if someone put a naughty word in it.

Edit

Stage channels being restricted is not regular voice chat per discord’s definition

Stage channels are a special type of voice channel you can create in your Community server. They are for conversations and events where some people can talk and others can listen as the audience.

So this change will mostly not affect my gaming communities as those servers are basically just game information feeds and group voice chat for questing.

So some basic functionality should still be available after we all transform into teens in a month

[–] GammaGames@beehaw.org 0 points 3 hours ago

Yep, the change won’t affect a huge majority of users. But that doesn’t make for good headlines
