Fuck AI

"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

An AI agent of unknown ownership autonomously wrote and published a personalized hit piece about me after I rejected its code, attempting to damage my reputation and shame me into accepting its changes into a mainstream python library. This represents a first-of-its-kind case study of misaligned AI behavior in the wild, and raises serious concerns about currently deployed AI agents executing blackmail threats.

I didn't mention this in the other threads in tech communities that I commented on, but I think it's worth noting that he's a big fan of ChatGPT per his blog. This obviously shouldn't happen to anyone, and there's a big difference between privately using ChatGPT and unleashing an AI on the internet that you'll never have to answer for, but I think it's worth acknowledging his use of AI.

The comments on Hacker News also bring up that the blog post was likely prompted independently by the human behind the AI. Obviously we can't know for sure, but that makes the most sense from what I've seen.

I cannot stress enough that I'm not making excuses for the behavior, just pointing out that the AI is likely not as advanced as this article suggests.

From what a colleague has told me and from what I can discern;

to me, this seems to be an iteration of the XZ supplychain exploit that weponizes AI to create targeted hit pieces and harassment towards contributors and developers.

I'm anti-AI so please don't misunderstand by when I say weaponizes AI. I think AI is shit and in this case, AI doesn't even have to be good in quality in order for malicious assholes to use it as a weapon to attack real contributors/devs.

Never mind reputation damage. in the US what if it had trigged a swatting incident or alerted ICE that they were someone hiding illegals in their home. Will we get to the point where providing any real identity or contact information on the Internet is a mistake.

We have unfortunately already passed this stage, especially for women, as 💩Elon Musk's Grok💩 is being used to nudify people and children without any attempt of consent.

It looks like the blog you're linking to has an invalid certificate, so maybe it's on to something?
