Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

Linux is frustration, but it will set you free.

Did it make him go bald?

    [–] borQue@lemmy.zip 5 points 17 hours ago

    There is no Windows.

Linux is a kernel for OS. See, I told you what Linux is. I did it!

The funny part of the original scene is that that is exactly what Morpheus himself does when Neo is outside the Matrixβ€”tells him what the Matrix is.

This is one of a few different examples (in that film and the others) that give credence to reading Morpheus as less trustworthy than he is styled. He should maybe be doubted more often.

    [–] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 hours ago

Maybe there's a filter that keeps you from saying stuff like that inside the matrix.

    [–] spicehoarder@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 day ago

Yeah, but clearly this is a difference between knowledge and understanding.

    [–] victorz@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Maybe Morpheus meant that no one can explain it and also be believed. πŸ˜…

Maybe the real matrix was the friends we made along the way.

I know it is an obvious term for you techbros, but kernel means nothing to your average person though. I would doubt most of them would even know what an OS is (especially abbreviated like that).

It's a government agency in the United Kingdom called the Ordnance Survey. They make all the maps.

I was originally set up to help defend against catholic rebellions so it is historically linked to the army. That's probably where the Colonel comes in to it.

    [–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

That's probably where the Colonel comes in to it.

    I think its originally French

Explanation for dummies: Linux is a launcher of computer programs.

    [–] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 hours ago

Oh like a slingshot for floppies?

    [–] Venator@lemmy.nz 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So it's like the start menu? (j/k)

    [–] ulterno@programming.dev 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

    Naah!

It's what starts the start menu.

It's what the init system goes to, to do the real work.

Thanks for the lol of today.

Best explanation of what KERNEL is, it's like car engine and all electronics around it. It's all hidden under the hood, but makes the whole thing run.

Cars have been around for long enough that even non techy people understand at least the crudest basics and this helps them understand computer things when used as analogy.

    [–] iopq@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

    So linux is the CPU?

    [–] TimeSquirrel@kbin.melroy.org 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

As someone who's worked on other people's cars, you're giving people way too much credit for knowing stuff about cars...

I have encountered people that didn't know what engine oil was even for or why it had to be changed out periodically.

    [–] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They don't need to. But they know what an engine is, don't they? Even if they know nothing else about it? It's the part of the car that goes vroom and makes everything else possible.

    [–] Murdoc@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

I'm reminded of this book I had as a kid. It explained so many things so easily. It explained how an ICE works by using analogous items you'd already know as a kid for every part of the engine. For example, for the fuel injector it showed a perfume spray bottle. It was brilliant, and why it was never required reading in school is a mystery and tragedy. 818Iog6EVzL.AC_SL1500

Yeah, but... but... like, but... if you just explain it, you'll put people off. You've got to get them to install it first so that they get hooked.

Now eat this random pill I found

Linux is like windows but not corporate and nerds lovingly made it and you have lots of choice and freedom and there's a penguin and a fox girl and she's trans

    checkmate it was super easy

    [–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Then Ubuntu is Corporate Nerd Windows.

If Ubuntu is Corporate Nerd Windows..

What is RedHat then? Just Corpo Windows without the nerd part?

    [–] rtxn@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Ubuntu is the corporate business owner that got its starting capital from running a brick-and-mortar shop.

RHEL is the offspring of corporate business owners with generational wealth.

    [–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Live boot isos are also available

You take the red pill, you wake up to the real world.

You take the blue pill, you keep dreaming.

You take the green pill, you just get to… try reality out?

    [–] Evkob@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

It's important to make sure reality is compatible with your hardware.

Let's ask Richard Stallman to explain Linux.

    [–] ExtremeUnicorn@feddit.org 4 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Linux... snacks on something from his foot is not an operating system itself. It is merely the kernel, a part of the GNU slash Linux, or, as I've recently started to call it, GNU plus Linux operating system.

Can't. He's in Dorcia and they won't let us in.
