Fuck Disney. I have sucked the mouse's cock since they took over Marvel. No more. I am even canceling my comic books subs and I have collected Fantastic Four for over 50 years. No more.

[–] Septimaeus@infosec.pub 35 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This impresses the hell out of me. I don’t collect but I’ve known many collectors, and I know what a decision like this represents.

Its not that impressive. Marvel comics have been dog shit for a while now. Its like saying Im not gonna watch Happy Days anymore, but youve on season 11, and it was season 5 that Fonzi jumped the shark.

[–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago

Fuck them for buying up Marvel and Star Wars. Their problem is they are afraid of original ideas.

[–] just_another_person@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's a good point I didn't even think of. They fucking OWN comics now. We need more independent comics that are as popular.

[–] UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (3 children)

A lot of rich people are buying up media to control information.

[–] Katana314@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

It at least makes me very happy how plausible it is for a completely independent artist to make games on Steam or Itch that are universally enjoyed. Sadly there is a current trend of "NSFW" games getting banned on those platforms...

I wanted to plug one game that had been particularly victimized. It was an "unreliable narrator" game where you played as a stalker obsessively trying to find the real name of his favorite pornstar. It was uncomfortable, artistic, thought-provoking, and immediately tripped the ban filters. I thought I bookmarked it but if someone else knows it a reminder would be awesome.

Before this I was thinking of getting back into Spider-Man comics like I had as a kid.

Not touching that with a 50 ft pole now.

I didn't cancel my $1 per month Disney or Hulu subscriptions. But I did cancel my $40 ESPN + NFL+ subscription and made sure to put the reason why.

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 84 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You should cancel your $1 per month Disney and Hulu subscriptions simply out of spite, and pirate their content instead. It is not hard to do.

[–] Branquinho@lemmy.eco.br 36 points 1 week ago

It ain't much, but it's honest work.

[–] Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world 29 points 1 week ago

I appreciate that. I'm just trying to be honest. And if anyone isn't willing to go nuclear, they can still make changes. In my case, I cut out 95% of what I was giving to them.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

I was getting full access to Hulu and Disney ad-free for $10 a month. Canceled them both. You should cancel the $1 subs just to send the message.

[–] BigBenis@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

my $1 per month Disney or Hulu subscriptions

I'm sorry, what?? Did you get grandfathered in on some crazy deal?

[–] Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

There's always a $1 per month (for one year) Black Friday promotion for new Hulu accounts. We just flip between two accounts every year.

This last year they had the same promotion for Disney+.

It makes me wish I had a Disney+ subscription to cancel

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Yeah, I mean, I'm already stealing it off my brother in-law's login, so I guess I'm doing my part.

[–] Zagorath@aussie.zone 4 points 1 week ago

I've felt this about a lot of things over the past few years.

Now let them bring him back but keep your sub cancelled.

NBC News is also reporting more alarming news for the conglomerate.

“A number of celebrities, including NSYNC band member Lance Bass and ‘Transparent’ star Amy Landecker, have shared screenshots to social media that show their cancellations of their Disney-affiliated subscriptions,” NBC is reporting before adding, “As the message gained traction over the last day across social media sites, Google Trends showed an uptick of searches for the terms ‘cancel Disney Plus’ and ‘boycott Disney,’ as posters declared they were leaving the streaming platforms behind.”

That led popular podcaster Bill Simmons, who was doubtful about Kimmel’s ABC future to have second thoughts.

I don’t know who those people are. Or care. (I “know” NSYNC, but it’s not like I can name them or any songs.) As for a “popular” podcaster - ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ okay?

Just - for a huge story on billion dollar media conglomerates folding under fascism, ending with . . . that - what I quoted there . . . ehh. Not great. Obama? Harrison Ford? fuck, i dunno - someone with a little more footprint or relevance?

[–] kinkles@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 week ago

You know shit is getting real when legendary and global music icon Lance Bass unsubs.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I don’t know who those people are.

But divorced parents trying to buy their kids love care. And after ~~comic book nerds~~ collectors , they're probably the second biggest income for Disney. After all the collectors only buy for themselves usually, whereas a parent may have to buy for more than one.

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

some of these podcasters have higher viewership numbers than Kimmel, just fyi.

these boomer networks are a dying business and they know it, when people leave they don't come back

Kimmel shouldn't return. He should tell Disney to get fucked and go the Spotify route.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 33 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Spotify is a shitty company nobody should be giving money to. They gave Joe Rogan a platform out of greed when others shunned him.

Tidal has better quality, pays artists four times as much, and doesn't do this sort of shit.

He should definitely do something else and shove it in their face. They still have to pay him regardless. I don't think Spotify is the right route though...

I personally think he should tour a live show as Conan did and really take it up a notch. That single tour launched an entirely new world of opportunities for Conan, and I'm sure it would do the same for Kimmel.

[–] Intergalactic@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (12 children)

Spotify is infinitely worse than Disney imo.

I don't want to see Kimmel come back as if nothing happened. I want to see him find a new platform and farm the stupidity of Disney, Sinclair, etc for gold for the next few months. What Disney and co. did was not some stupid PR misstep, they let the mask slip on how easily they would fall in line behind a political pay master to keep him happy and in the process effectively violate the 1st amendment by giving the government a method of silencing speech. Which should be the kind of thing that burns the whole corporation to the ground and gets those in charge ostracized from polite society.

There should be no coming back for them from this.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

I look forward to the return of Mr Mouse and how he will be portrayed in South Park!

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 week ago

Kimmel was a symptom. Disney needs to be canceled.

[–] Newsteinleo@midwest.social 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I want to known what the next step is? OK we punched then in the face, but what do we do to nock them down and curb stomp them?

[–] 3abas@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Don't re-sign up, remember this moment, they aren't you friends. Torrent the movies/shows you want to watch, don't go to their parks, don't let your children get an early childhood obsession with them, don't buy their toys and merchandise, and do this for all the evil companies.

McDonald's, BK, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, dominos, papa John's, pizza hut, those are easy ones. Stop eating fast food and stop feeding it to your children. I bet there are 20 good independent coffee shops near you, stop buying Nazi charcoal. Find a local pizza shop with a brick oven, I'm sure they deliver.

Google, Amazon, stop paying for their services. Buy some hard drives and learn to self host, it's never been a better time. Blocks ads when not using their services.

Boycott and divestment works, it's what ended apartheid in South Africa, it's effecting Israel's economy and may very well end the apartheid in Palestine once Americans wake up and stop the unlimited funding of genocide with their children's future. These companies will only stop being evil when customers let them know that evil is a red line, but as long as apathy continues it'll be more profitable to be as evil as they are today, and worse.

Microsoft is worse than Google, Oracle is worse too. I mean yeah, boycott Google, but fuck Microsoft and Oracle extra hard.

What is this? Just another streaming service? Or somehow more specialized as an anti-Disney alternative.
