Personally owned as an adult? PS2. They were so hard to come by at launch, but I justified the purchase as it also doubled as a not so good DVD player, which was also starting to catch on in popularity.

This would be my nephews first console experience as kids. Then the PS3 delayed launch, so I got the XBOX 360. Many 360’s later (red ring of death) and availability of the PS3 slim, I switched back. Also had a Wii. Multiple PS3 slim, PS3 super slims and lots of teen gaming sessions leading up to PS4’s and the kids now young adults migrated to PC gaming instead.

The original fat PS2 had a compartment you could store your drugs in. My friend knew someone who kept their tabs of acid in there.

ps1, but i was so young i barely remember it. i have more memories with ps2. my dad skipped ps3 because he found out the 2nd gens werent backwards compatable with ps2 games so he got an xbox 360 for us instead. never had 4, but bought a 5 for me and my siblings a year or so ago

Put a few drone shaped holes in those and you got yourself 2026 Dubai cityscape

[–] Francislewwis@lemmy.world 9 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

The PS2 era really felt special. So many iconic games and memories from that generation.

[–] Atomic@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Probably because a ridiculous amount of games were produces for the PS2. I don't think any console, ever, has had that many games made for it.

[–] BigBananaDealer@lemmy.world 1 points 48 minutes ago

i think the last official game made for ps2 was in like 2014 or something crazy

I hate when they stand the psone on its side.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 4 points 6 hours ago

None of the above, I started on the PSone.

[–] dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

PS1 but had Master System and Mega Drive before that.

[–] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Hardly. I grew up in a terrible household, just material possessions were provided but you had to tolerate decades of trauma so 🤷.

Also, contrary to the comments in here it doesnt mean we were rich. We lived on a council estate and my dad worked in a warehouse as a picker.

[–] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 4 points 10 hours ago

Rich kids had ps2, but I only owned ps4.

Did you have that goofy little flip-up LCD that attached to it?

[–] MidsizedSedan@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I went to my rich friends house for the PS2. EyeToy and Spy Kids 3d was the coolest thing ever.

I wish... 3 countries on, I haven't even been in the same town as him since I think 2006 at the latest. Don't even think I had access to the internet at that time.

Personal Rant Time

Looking back, I think he grew up with a single parent. My parents split up after I finished school/reached adulthood.

Chatting to others who had 'less than optimal parents' I noticed that even though some had parents who split up at one point, its different when you are 6-8 years old, and you learn to live with it.

And when you are 18-20 years old, getting ready to move out, and then you learn your entire childhood was a lie.

@The_Picard_Maneuver somehow I expected a beard trimmer in between there.

[–] red_tomato@lemmy.world 110 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Placing PS1 that way is atrocious

[–] criticon@lemmy.ca 27 points 1 day ago (2 children)

PS2 also developed laser issues if used that way, I can't recall PS3

[–] numanair@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 hour ago

PS3 originally had drives that failed anyway. Had to bake my OG, as well as replace the bd drive.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

ps2 developed laser issues regardless. i've tuned and cleaned so many of those. should have charged but i liked my friends.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

do you know if there was a way to fix the Dreamcast laser? I was like 19 when mine started failing and I think I just kept turning up the voltage pot a teeny bit to fix it for a while until it eventually burned out.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I do not know, but I learned the ps2 method by searching on the internets. I hate to recommend YouTube and reddit, but those are probably your best bets.

If the laser itself is not salvagable, there's always replacing the laser. I don't know if it's plugged or soldered in, but if it already doesn't work, what more can you do to it?

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 2 points 3 hours ago

I gave it away years ago once dreamcast emulation became a thing, I was mostly just curious!

[–] joelfromaus@aussie.zone 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

We had one that had to be cleaned every 3 months or so. The laser would begin sticking on the guide rails and have to be re-lubricated.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

I'd just refocus or whatever that white knob did, and clean the dust off the lens

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Some of us had to play ours upside down after the laser got all jank or something

Hell, the PS5 is shown vertical but with the stand in the horizontal configuration. The PS2 and PS4 also had stands available because they weren't stable on their side out of the box, and the systems aren't shown with them. Unsure about the PS3.

[–] numanair@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 hour ago

Also they didn't rotate the logo on the ps2

i’m still impressed by the ps5 design, i never would’ve thought a console could look pretentious

This angle really highlights that PS4 was the best design by far

[–] angstylittlecatboy@reddthat.com 1 points 8 hours ago

It's the most bland one.

[–] yuri@pawb.social 8 points 1 day ago

there’s a slim ps2 knocking on your door right now

[–] LiveLM@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Alright, they fucked up the scale on the 4, no way it's smaller than the 1

I love the industrial design of the PS2 so much. It has all of that optimistic futurism look of the late 90s/early 2000s.
