You misspelled "image macros."

[–] cybercafe@lemmy.world 1 points 31 minutes ago

The thing about this though, is that before the advice dog and the impact font era, memes had a lot more variety. To me, this was watered down normie shit.

Why is philosoraptor crying?

[–] okwhateverdude@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

Those aren't tears, it's a face tattoo. They were all the rage back then in the before times. Example A:

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 hour ago

Pretty sure we're all crying these days

[–] lobut@lemmy.ca 1 points 42 minutes ago

I remember when a meme was coined by Richard Dawkins before the Internet meme became the standard.

Back when I visited icanhascheesburger

Icanhas and Failblog were hilarious back in the day. I think that CEO Ben whatshisname wrecked it by commercializing it.

Same, untill it became a nazi cesspool. Then reddit, untill the API ban.

[–] Tonava@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 hours ago

Haha, I had the exact same route and for the same reasons

[–] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 hour ago

I stared at this for 5 minutes trying to figure out if it was loss or not.

[–] Sonotsugipaa@lemmy.dbzer0.com 72 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

Now they're mostly Twitter screenshots ;_;

[–] Virtvirt588@lemmy.world 7 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

right-winger posts some obscene post.

left-winger replies with a "gotcha" style of reply, disregarding anything else.

Both continue to use the same platform.

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 31 points 6 hours ago

We need to go back.

[–] blarghly@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Now trying to turn this into a PCM

[–] pleb_maximus@piefed.zip 18 points 6 hours ago

[–] okwhateverdude@lemmy.world 27 points 6 hours ago

2006 we weren't posting image macros en-masse like this. They definitely existed but I don't remember seeing a lot of these until at least 2009-2010

Keep in mind the general population wasn't really on Facebook until 2007 and people weren't posting this stuff to myspace

I'm also being nitpicky and autistic about it so feel free to ignore me

[–] NannerBanner@literature.cafe 1 points 1 hour ago

Maybe you weren't, but in the places they were born they were quite massive. Enough that the rules officially said you could be banned for it.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 3 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

yeah it was definitely more niche. i remember when the motiwational poster format made way to the advice dog format, and at that paint we banically just copy-pasted the images around different forums.
