1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

Every fucking time. Last night I was having a bunch of crashes after normal use. And yep, it was related to the Nvidia driver…

I don't game as much as I used to, but for the games I do play, I'm not seeing many (or any) problems. Video encoding with ffmpeg through nvenc works fine too.
Current issues I'm having are 3d acceleration in KVM under Wayland. Apparently it only works with nouveau? Not a deal breaker in any sense, just the latest observation.

Why you choose Nvidia above all? Just dump it and live happily ever after.

I'm still using a 2016 card (1050Ti). If somebody could send a Polaris card my way, it'd save me the headache of having to deal with updating my system to legacy drivers (and from the AUR with my not-very-fast internet? no thanks Samuel). Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with this performance (and yeah, ignoring new/bloated games) and the GPU market seems pretty wrecked by the crypyo->NFT->AI market (on top of companies largely abandoning low-end).

GPU aside I did build a Ryzen system in 2019 because the sale prices were great (and it was a huge leap in performance from my 2011 hardware), so that's something. Still happy there, too.

As for why I went nVidia in 2016? I had ATI driver issues way back in Windows, so that may have clouded my judgement on AMD options a bit longer than it should have though.

the only problems i've ever faced with nvidia drivers is when i downloaded the wrong ones back on day 1. adobe software and kernel level anticheat are the real culprits

That is so ridiculously accurate. And sad. And infuriating. And then funny again because I am reuglarly going mad with those fucking drivers since I have to work with them on Linux professionally. I hate it. It is funny and tragic. Just like life.

I had issue with Nvidia and also with a Realtek PCIe RTL8125, windows work like a charm with the same configuration. Even if I preefer Linux I had to move back for stability.

It's fucking hilarious that this has been going on since I started playing with Linux in the mid 00s.

Its been such a ballache getting games developed on Unity to run on my 3080 on Mint. I hate having to dual boot into windows to play them but most of the time that's the only realistic option I'm left with.
