They're still doing it? When I accidentally click a reddit link I don't get the paywall anymore.
Or maybe they saw that it was a 100% bounce rate from me and then reverted the behavior (like a cookie with a counter, after 20 bounces don't show the paywall anymore?)
It will well and truly be dead and gone once old.reddit.com stops working. It remains the one good way to view the site, regardless of device.
My theory is that they realize that a significant number of power users on the site are still using old.reddit.com, so they are keeping it going because getting rid of it would turn the website into a ghost town. They will continue to push their app and new website because they can push more advertising through it to the people that are just there to consume.
If you're on Firefox, download a user agent plug in and change your your browser to say it's a tablet or windows pc. Problem solved. I already do this when their page locking pop-up started bothering me lol

I left when my last account got banned because I suggested a way for dealing with billionaires may or may not include removing their head from the rest of their body.

Perfect, I might even set my UA for reddit to mobile then, I need an "excuse" to keep on using it less. I still browse it without an account but I should lose the habit.
Using an app means more bloat, more ads, more notifications, more forced engagement and more tracking. Since the site very clearly works through a mobile browser there is no technical reason for doing this. It is about forcing people to doom scroll this shit rather than check in from time to time.
Yeah I’m not using their app. I don’t want my information and data harvested so they can learn how to better sell useless shit to people.
Reddit is a shit hole.
Maybe its too on the nose to say so on Lemmy, but fuck Reddit right in the earhole. Their pearl-clutching, risk-averse, pro-corporate moderation-bot and tattle-tale system was the last straw.
