I never upvote loss memes just on principle, but this one was pretty good

They went full-on bad joke. The crazy bastards, they finally did it.

Loss is the title of this specific comic strip of the webcomic Ctrl+Alt+Del:

It’s notable because the webcomic was basically just a weekly comedy sketch. It had a few ongoing story arcs involving the main characters, but it was always upbeat and funny. Characters may be in bad situations, but they had some sort of one liner or punchline for it.

So this wordless strip about a miscarriage was a drastic change in tone. At best, it’s simply an awkward tone shift with zero warning. But at worst, it’s an attempt to start a conversation about an extremely difficult subject, in a setting that is entirely inappropriate. It would be like going to a college house party and trying to solemnly raise awareness for pancreatic cancer. At best, people will think you’re an awkward killjoy.

The fans of the webcomic quickly started memeing about Loss, and posting remakes/demakes of it. It eventually got reduced into the version we know today: the 1, 2, 2, L format. It became a sort of rickroll for the people who recognize it.

Posted here for more context for others:

Cyanide and Happiness took a direct quote from the author on how they actually view miscarriage

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Don't forget to mention his hypocritical views on miscarriage when bringing it up too.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh I knew about the stuff explained in the first comment but not about the followup stuff. Please continue.

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Wow it was much harder to find this time for some reason.

Found Cyanide and Happiness' comic which verbatim quoted the author of Loss to point out his hypocrisy at least:

[–] Mwa@thelemmy.club 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh its not called headphones but hearing protection?

[–] meekah@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 month ago

Yes, headphones play music etc

It's a comic episode, made by a once popular comedy comic strip writer, which describes his partners miscarriage. He runs into the hospital ( I ) talks to a person at the reception ( I i ), talks to the doctor ( I I ), and then sees his partner lying in a hospital bed ( I _ ). A very private bit of information monetized in poor taste for millions of readers. Also it was unfunny and uninteresting. Completely unnessecary. Everyone hated him for it. Comic strip was called Penny something, I think.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

It was called Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

The other one you’re thinking of was Penny Arcade, a completely different strip.

[–] daggermoon@piefed.world 6 points 1 month ago

I can attest to this

Huh? Speak up!
