Can confirm. Back at the beginning of my IT career (mid 1980's), I worked as a temp for a computer manufacturer in their refurb repairs department. In those days, kit was so expensive that everything got repaired if it went wrong, and one of my jobs was repairing keyboards - PC keyboards, and dumb terminal ones - and the first part of the process was stripping and cleaning them. There was a lot more room for crumbs and dust back then, too, and man did they get full. Crumbs, staples, paper clips, hair grips, all sorts. I had literal mould growing in some of them. I remember the ones coming in from Italy were the worst for that for some reason.

There’s definitely some leftover coke crusted in some of my keyboards…

Mmmm board chow

It would be nice if there was a button or some app that could temporarily disable the keyboard, so it could be cleaned without accidentally changing settings for a running app, writing your boss you are not coming to work on Monday, firing few nukes, or wiping your whole system.

there's something like that in Bazzite! If you go to the menu -> system settings -> language -> keyboard, then physically unplug the keyboard, the keyboard should now be disabled!

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I just unplug it for a few minutes or lock my system

[–] BiscuityCat@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I have the keyboard plugged into a monitor and accessing the USB hub is seriously complicated, so that's not really an option for me.

But I could try locking the system. I just hope I won't lock myself out for few hours, because I have pressed Enter multiple times while cleaning it.

You can use a pair of scissors to terminate the connection anywhere along the wire and it will achieve the same thing

[–] snoons@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

Thanks, I'll do this next time.

Create a new local user w/o permissions and switch to that login before cleaning it. That way you only lock a fake user lol.

Guessing unplugging from the monitor is difficult as well?

[–] ddplf@szmer.info 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why not just write a script that would brick your PC so there is no risk anything would go wrong cleaning, and then just reinstall your OS when you're done?

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Because then I have to set up my environment again

[–] restingOface@quokk.au 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I figured there would be a simple setting for that in KDE Plasma, but looking it up, I am just getting results about disabling the virtual onscreen keyboard

[–] BiscuityCat@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I though so as well. However, I don't even see anything similar to disabling (USB) devices like in Windows.

You have to make sure all of your keys still work, you never know
