I just saw a couple of those recently, they're seriously huge, + their webs are set up pretty haphazardly and feeling a single strand on me while I walk by is terrifying

Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
This lil lady is over 3 inches wide, leg to leg. Saw her at friend's house this weekend!
The nsfw was a good idea, but you might wanna say it's a spider in the title so people know what to expect
Good idea, thank you!
Maybe it's just because I'm Australian, but that(8cm leg to leg) doesn't seem that large?
I you might be right that it's because you're Australian, hehe
Definitely one of the bigger spiders around here, but not dangerous at least. Although I here y'all got those kind covered as well 😨
Aside from the funnel web, it's usually the small ones you have to worry about. A lot like scorpions.
Can you tell me what continent your friend lives on? I need to make plans to either never go there or move immediately.
Oh these ladies are harmless, more important to keep an eye on the brown recluses, black windows, copper heads, water moccasins, rattlesnakes, republicans, and alligator snapping turtles.
real
Beautiful girl! Garden spiders are a force for good and seem to be a good luck omen 💛
Absolutely, helping keep the balance.
Here's to hoping for good luck 💚
If you’re in the southeastern US, please kill it. They’re invasive and kill our native orb weavers.
I am guessing Germany (or at least EU) based on the post location, but if you found this in the USA they are invasive so you should report finding one.
Things are massive, and I hear the webs are like 1m+ wide
Southeast US!
You are right that they are invasive here, but my understanding is that they are currently not considered an ecological threat in my area (they are basically just replacing a similar orb weaver that lives here).
I could be wrong though, maybe I'll have my friend call up his local UGA extension office.
Oh and yes, the web was over a 1m, almost a cube with a bunch of other spiders hanging out as well!
I hope they aren't replacing orb weavers. Those beauties are smaller than she is, but they will weave perfect huge webs in a spot that doesn't interfere with you at all for years at a time. IME it takes breaking some test lines a few times before the golden orb weaver will understand not to try to trap humans, but once that has been communicated they just eat all the flying pests that one really doesn't want around.
Can confirm. Spider has big ass.
